I found this recipe that was relatively cheap and delicious on [foodnetwork](https://foodnetwork.com/) and thought other people might enjoy it. I’ll list the price I paid for each ingredient.

It has:

1 pound dried pinto beans, picked through ($1.24)

1/2 pound bacon, chopped ($5.87/lb)

1 onion, finely chopped ($.78 each or $2.98/3lb bag)

1 tablespoon chili powder ($1.12)

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce ($1)

4 cups low-sodium chicken broth (Swanson $2.52, I didn’t have chicken broth. The substitution I used is in the imgur link)

Kosher salt

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar ($2.32) (I used red wine vinegar because that’s what I had)

2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives (optional) ($1.98) (Didn’t have them. Didn’t use)

I shop at Food Lion, but their website is down for maintenance right now so I found the prices on [walmart.com](https://walmart.com/). I already had some of the ingredients so I didn’t have to buy everything.

Here are some pictures I took while cooking with notes. I made a triple recipe to eat for the rest of the week, so that’s why there is so much.

Edit: the second picture should be at the end. Imgur doesn’t allow you to rearrange galleries anymore apparently.

Full Recipe:

Ingredients

1 pound dried pinto beans, picked through

1/2 pound bacon, chopped

1 onion, finely chopped

1 tablespoon chili powder

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

4 cups low-sodium chicken broth

Kosher salt

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives (optional)

Directions

Put the beans in a large wide pot or Dutch oven and cover with cold water by 1 inch. Bring to a boil, then remove from the heat and let soak 30 minutes; drain and rinse.

Return the beans to the pot and add the bacon, onion, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, chicken broth and 4 cups water. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to medium and simmer 30 minutes.

Add 1 teaspoon salt and reduce the heat to medium low. Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, 1 1/2 more hours. Partially uncover the pot and continue simmering, stirring occasionally, until the beans are creamy and the liquid is thick, about 30 more minutes. Add the vinegar and chives and season with salt.

Please pay attention to the post flair chosen. Recipe test is for recipes found in this sub and requires a link to the original r/budgetfood post. I’ve changed this to dinner.
