The complete Hanwoo K-BBQ experience at Majang Meat Market

The first time we had Hanwoo beef was several years ago at a fine dining restaurant in the fancy Shilla Hotel. It was part of an expensive multi-course meal and the meat was chewy yet flavourful, and balanced delicately with the soft and juicy fat.

Since then, we’ve been on the lookout to try Hanwoo again, preferably at a friendlier price point. The obvious choice was the Majang Meat Market, where we could buy beef directly from a butcher’s shop and BBQ it ourselves at a restaurant in the market itself.

We took Bus 2015 from Dongdaemun History & Culture Park and stopped just outside the market. After walking through most of the market, we settled on Jayeon Chukssan (자연축산) i.e. “Natural Livestock” and bought a 422gram mixed platter of the highest Grade 1++ Hanwoo for ₩71,000.

The butcher recommended restaurant Gogi Ingneun Maeul (고기익는마을) i.e. “Meat Cooking Village” where we cooked the meat ourselves. For a table charge of ₩6,000 per person, they provided the grill, heated charcoal, banchan, plain water and seasonings.

The Hanwoo met our already high expectations, and I regretted not buying more. Among all the meals we had during our 10 day vacation, this was our second-most favourite, behind the fantastic hanjeongsik at Hangaram.

If you’ve been thinking about going to the Majang Meat Market, but have been hesitating because it’s slightly off the beaten path, my advice is to just go. It truly is an experience not to be missed.
