My mom wanted me to ask Reddit if she needs a new one, she’s had it for years but doesn’t know if it’s necessary to change

Are those scratches or cracks?

Yeah, she needs a new one, imo 😊

I replaced mine when it started to look like this. My understanding is (and this is just from past comments on Reddit and the like, so you’re getting second hand internet knowledge here. Treat it as you will) those scores can have microcracks, which can trap liquid and form bacteria. Best to replace the pot at least, or use a liner in the meantime.

It’s absolutely fine

Tell her to use liners if it bothers her, I personally would use it until it gave out on it’s own. Could stuff get into cracks, yes it’s possible. Is any resulting bacteria likely to survive use, not remotely.
As for the ‘ewww’ factor, some of y’all should take an entry level biology course and learn about the actual amount of ‘ewww’ in your everyday environment. You have far more to fear from door knobs.

time for new crock.

She can still use it but getting a new one wouldn’t be a bad idea

Just a good bleaching and buy her silicone utensils for stirring and serving

Looks to me like marks left on porcelain from metal utensils. Might buff out with a ceramic cleaner. I think it’s safe, though a bit hard to tell for sure from the photo.

I haven’t read encouraging information here about recent slow cookers- heat too hot for example. I would probably go for a replacement crock. Although maybe the older heating element would need replacing too. I would be interested in what people who buy a new slow cooker think about them.
bubbanbrenda
No the older the better, the new ones get way too hot to quickly to truly “slowcook”

Try scrubbing it off with Barkeeper’s Friend first (I used to have white plates and that stuff took off “scratches” I was sure were there but disappeared after cleaning, it’s also MAGICAL for cleaning the Instant Pot stainless steel insert), but a new crockpot isn’t terribly expensive and the return on investment in this one has more than paid for itself if it’s several years old and she uses it often!

Just ask Evil Dr. Pork Chop for a micro-loan to get a new one. When it does fully crack, it might ruin whatever dish you’re cooking with it at the time. That would be sad.
Wonderful_Strain5195
Not necessary to change.
Mueryk
Unless it is cracked all the way through or leaking I wouldn’t worry about it in the least.
kryo2019
Scratches, no. Cracks yes.
KeiylaPolly
If they’re metal stains, no. Unless she’s looking for an excuse for a shiny new expensive one, in which case, yes, replace immediately.
