This event looks cool but I’m having doubts because of:

1. There’s been a lot of scammy food fests the last ten years in Austin. Maybe this is more legit because it’s through TLC?

2. Aren’t Gulf Oysters out of season?

Any advice is appreciated!

I personally only eat gulf oysters that are roasted but that is how I’ve always had them. Raw i look for ones from colder waters. Looks like they have a good variety though according to the event page! Biggest thing with food fests is to lower your expectations. Probably will be fun but also assume it will be crowded and that you may not get enough food if they run out or lines are long

From what I understand, most commercial Texas oysters are now farmed in deeper (cooler) water and can be harvested year-round now.

TLC is an actual restaurant on South Lamar. Not a scam.

Gulf Oysters only go out of ‘season’ in the warmer months when consumed raw because they could potentially be as risk for toxins from plankton. But it says they have East Coast and gulf and they’re doing raw and cooked. A lot of places will do east coast raw and gulf cooked since in the world of oysters on the half shelf gulf generally rank a lot lower than their PNW and East Coast siblings

I it’s like having a Mexican Food Festival in Sweden

It’s legit, but its not free. You still have to pay a la carte for anything you eat. The oyster eating contest I’m pretty sure you have to pay to enter.

I really like that place, esp w the weather turning. The moroccan/african spice is my favorite. Their chicken fried steak is also fantastic. Not cheap though.
