Don’t buy this Ball jar lifter. The silicone ends fail.

So I used this maybe 6 times canning. It’s never been in boiling water for a long time. Not one but both sides flailed today.

That’s scary! I can imagine a jar dropping in boiling water and splashing everywhere. It’s too bad because I love how these grab the jars.

This is the one I have. Really liked the ergonomics.

Thank you for the heads up! I’ll buy a backup.

Interesting. I’ve been using this same lifter going on three years with no issues. Maybe they’re making them cheaper now?
Also, why hasn’t anyone invented a lifter with some sort of flared water guard? I typically sterilize my jars in the water bath, so I’m pulling them out with the lifter then turning them sideways to empty out the boiling water. Some of the water inevitably runs along the lifter and onto my hands. I know I could sterilize in the oven instead, but the way I’m set up it’s more convenient to keep to the water bath.

Just sad, must be shrinkflation. I have one we bought maybe 15 years ago and we love it. The spring loaded action makes getting the jars out so much easier. I wondering if it was a bad batch though and you could get your money back

Dang. Will have to retrofit my wife’s lifter with some metal handles. We’ve looked at other brands and Ball is the only one we’ve found that is spring loaded.

You might have just gotten a bad batch. I’ve had mine for 10 or 15 years and I love it. It gets pretty heavy usage and is still as good as new. If you replace it and have a similar experience then perhaps the manufacturing quality has gone down.

Thanks for the tip! I have the green Ball jar lifter which is metal with the grips covered in rubber I think. Gets the job done even if it doesn’t look as nice as that one.

Happened to us recently as well. I think they had a defective run. The replacement we got is fine.
