Local grocery had a buy one get one special on ribs a while back, so I picked up 4 racks, all went in the freezer for a rainy day. Just noticed the “previously frozen” wording on the label (I bought them thawed).

Any idea if freezing/thawing twice is a big deal? I thawed a rack this morning and cooked on my pit tonight. It tasted fine, but seemed… tough. Not sure if it was user error on the cook, or the nature of twice frozen meat.

  1. Not a food safety issue, but it will definitely hurt the quality.

It’s not recommended for that reason.

Contrary to popular belief it’s actually safe as long as it’s thawed properly. I believe the defrost, refreeze, then defrosted again is what caused it to be tougher than a fresh defrost or not frozen to begin with

Yo PA! Weis always has the bogos on ribs but I’d cook them over refreezing them personally

It’s perfectly safe. On a delicate cut it would likely ruin the texture. On a rack of ribs? Nah. It’s totally fine.
