ESSEX, MASSACHUSETTS: Welcome to Essex, Massachusetts, home to Woodman’s, where they invented the New England style deep fried clam! During our trip to New England we were not going to miss this opportunity to eat the king of deep fried seafood, and we got a gigantic $284.75 Fisherman’s Platter!

Woodman’s of Essex (https://g.page/woodmansofessex?share) Total price – $284.75 – We arrived to Woodman’s of Essex, ready to devour some deep fried seafood. As the true story goes, back in 1916 Lawrence “Chubby” Woodman and his wife Bessie had a cart and sold fresh clams and deep fried potato chips. One day one of his fisherman friends told him to deep fry some clams in the potato chip oil. It was almost a joke – they said it was something humorous, but after trying it, they realized they might be onto something. They invented and popularized the fried clam. To this day, the original fried clam is available at Woodman’s of Essex and it’s as good as it’s ever been.

At Woodman’s they also have a host of other deep fried seafood, including clam strips, scallops, shrimp, and fish, plus onion rings and fries. We decided to order a huge fisherman’s platter, including a mix of everything piled high onto Jeffrey’s lobster tray.

While all the seafood at Woodman’s of Essex is delicious and remarkably deep fried and crispy, still nothing beats the deep fried clams – the original deep fried clams.

Kelly’s Roast Beef (https://goo.gl/maps/9fiUWiJMWFYnz4Y98) Price – $14.02 meal combo – next up on this mini tour, just down the Massachusetts coast I stopped at Kelly’s Roast Beef, legendary for their roast beef sandwich. It was every bit as good as I was hoping it to be and everything it needed to be. Don’t miss it when you visit Massachusetts!

  1. Blasphemy dipping into tartar or ketchup… 😂. Steamers? Broth only… Lets you enjoy the actual flavor. Price? At 59 bucks for a large clam… No longer an everyman food… Great video. But actual cost w/out tip $352 clamolas

  2. Oversized American diet along with deep fried menus and obesity issues. Stop and eat some of this as a treat but not so much you clog your arteries.. I like fish of all kings but bake it, grill it and occasionally fry it. Never say never or you won’t do it like you should..

  3. As a native new englander, steamed whole bellies is the top form. I don't get why people take something as amazing as clams and deep fry them. Save the deep fryer for onion rings, fries and bland chicken.

  4. Woodman's is an absolute tourist trap. Not all it's cracked up to be. Very overrated. If you want outstanding Seafood you go to the causeway in Gloucester or the choate bridge Pub in Ipswich or the anchor in Beverly.

  5. Too bad at Kelly's you did not get the sauce on the side so you could taste the meat and then put some sauce on. I was a chauffeur for 12 years and Kelley's on Revere Beach is just up the street from Logan Airport so if we had time in between flights we would head there for a large roast beef. If you ever get back to Kelly's try their clam chowder, I am a born and breed New Englander and I have never had better chowda than I have at Kelly's. Their chowda has big chunks of clam, just the right amount of potatoes, its buttery, briny clam goodness and it is not thick like wallpaper paste
Woodman's is iconic, the prices of seafood are outrageous.

  6. I live in Southern Maine. One day my daughter and I decided to drive to Woodman's because we both love seafood and we had heard great things. We are both natives of New Hampshire. Well, all I'll say is that it was a big disappointment and waste of time. Won't happen again. Also, living in Maine now for 16 years I have to say that there are very few places that I've found with 'great' seafood. Ted's in Acton was great until it was sold last year. Not anymore. Lord's Clam Box in South Sanford is really good; my daughter thinks it's great. But if I could go anywhere for seafood right now it's Al's in North Hampton. So good. A lot of the really great seafood places have gone the way of the dodo.

  7. Forget the tartar. Give me cocktail sauce with lots of horseradish… 😋😋😋
Over $300 minus 20% discount. Sweet.

  8. A couple of times my friend "Larry" and I would launch our kayaks 7am across the street, go out for the day and comeback to our starting point and eat at "Woodmans". Good times. Good food.
Yes "Kelly's" is a good spot to get a Roast Beef Sandwich, sit on the wall and look out at Revere Beach.
    5 STARS!

  9. I know a lot of Roast Beef places use this type of sauce….I think the Kelly Roast Beef sauce is "James River" BBQ sauce.

  10. I like how Mark has random eater friends that he just hooks up with and goes out and chows down with. What a great way to make a living.

  11. I would absolutely love to go there and try the clams! I could almost taste them as you guys were eating. Haven't had good fried clams in years! I want to go there!!

  12. Mark, i read your biodata, you are from US, May i know the One with you in the video clip, is he your dad, he looks exactly like you

    More success in the future

  13. Sorry but i dont get why you would pile all of that onto one Large Platter, mixed together. .
at least put it in separate trays so you know what you are sampling. the many trays would fill the whole table and it would be much nicer of a display as well.
