(3) Opened tin – only one squicky mackerel spine, which I removed. Mackerel is skin-on (works for me)
(4-5) Tin oil and fish into the rice cooker – this fish was a little dry, so I thought it needed to be rehydrated by cooking with the rice

This is a tin we bought a while ago before we knew that hubby does not like mackerel. Well, now we know, so it’s up to me to eat it!
This is a quality mackerel, with intact skin. Happily, only one piece had a spine, which I removed. Y’all know mackerel spines squick me out, so they gotta go!
The texture of the fish was a little dry, since it had been broiled. I was going to serve this over rice anyways, so I decided to cook the rice together with some chopped garlic and ginger + tin sauce and mackerel.
The result was a more moist fish that shredded nicely in a delectably but not overwhelmingly fish-flavored rice bowl.
I spooned some leftover sesame-soy sauce brocolli and added a side of kimchi, because KIMCHI!! A little drizzle of the kimchi liquid in this bowl made everything sing!!
Nevertheless, I have decided that with boneless mackerel being a thing, I don’t have to deal with those horrible spines anymore, EVER!! They take me straight back to my childhood, when my mother refused to take the spines out before she made mackerel patties. Yuck!
So for me personally, I am not buying this tin again – but that’s not because the tin is bad or the fish is unpleasant.
Life is good – this mackerel is good – but mackerel spines are NOT. That is my ONLY issue with this tin.
Saba-kabaaki fish tins are available at upscale grocery stores, and at Asian grocery stores – I got mine at H Mart, but have also seen this tin at HEB Central Market, 99 Ranch, SF Supermarket, and the Mitsuwa.
It’s a solid 7/10, great for anyone who wanted a sauced mackerel tin for an easy meal.

I will have to pick one of these up next time I’m in Orlando with all of the Asian markets. Great write up. 🐟
