Happy New Year everyone it is January 1st 2024 it’s like 9:00 in the morning we didn’t get any sleep hardly we had fireworks going off until about 2:00 in the morning all around the neighborhood but I had planned to make cabbage rolls today cabbage rolls are one of our

Favorites I’m going to take you back here and we’re going to get started making everything for them and cabbage it’s a great thing to have on New Year’s Day because cabbage means money let’s come on back here and let me show you what we’re working on and to get all of

This rolling we’re going to start off with the rice and then we’re going to work with the Cabbage make that delicious filling for those cabbage rolls and then put this together y’all come on back now the first thing we’re going to do is start getting our rice

Cooking I’m just using a medium Skillet I’m going to put it over high heat start heating heating that up with one cup of water I want to bring this to a boil and while that’s happening let’s go ahead and just add a little bit of salt I mean very little because we’re not

Making very much rice we’re making one cup of rice I’ve got my pot of water coming to a rolling boil and what we’re going to do is steam our cabbage leaves now I’ve got my cabbage here let’s take a look yeah I’m really surprised at how

Light the cabbage is I was looking for some really dark cabbage leaves but woo that’s what we get down here in Southeast Texas we’re in Katie so what I’m going to do is come down to the core right here I’m just going to cut that off just use a good sharp knife

There we go take that off now I’ve already taken off a few of the outer layers and then giving it a rinse I’m just going to go in with my knife and then just cut that core out just be very careful we just want that

Steam to get up into those leaves so you take that core out that way you can have that happen then I’m just going to grab a spoon and pop it out just don’t hit yourself in the head with it now keep an eye on your water you don’t want it to

Boil away we’re going to add in half a cup of white long grain rice now you can use like a Mahatma or you can use bosotti I’m going to place the lid on turn down the heat down to low and we’re going to cook that for 15

Minutes I’m going to take a large spoon and just place it upside down on it and we’re going to place it into the water very carefully there we go we’re going to let it steam good should take about 10 minutes right I’m just going to take some

Foil and just kind of tint it over the Cabbage just to kind of keep the steam in all right let’s take a look at our cabbage I’m going to take the foil off we’ll use it every so often cuz as we’re pulling the leaves off we’ll put the

Foil back on to get of the leaves soften down so I’m just going to take a fork and I’m just going to start peeling the layers of the leaves off just make sure you go from the sides just like that oh look at that I’m going to place

It on some paper towels to kind of drain them off now if you need to use some tongs you can do that also to help you all right there’s another one right there now now once you get to the point where you can put a lid on that will

Really help but we’re going to keep doing this while the rice is cooking I’m looking to get about 15 16 cabbage leaves out of this cabbage that I can actually roll with all right I’m going to take the lid off my rice you want to keep an eye on

It there’s not a lot of rice in the pot and you don’t want it to burn on the bottom so keep an eye on it it may not even need 15 minutes probably around 12 if you can get that that’s totally fine fine I’m going to add this to my big

Bowl oh some of it’s stuck down in there but that’s fine we’ll have enough going of scrape it off hope everyone has a Happy New Year we were ready for a new year huh yeah we’re going to start it off good nice classic comforting meal y’all

So all right so I’ve peeled the onion I’ve taken off both ends I’m just going to cut it in half we’re just going to follow the lines of the onion I’m kind of rushing this morning I don’t have anything to rush for though I mean the kids are sleeping

Chopping these up and I’ll bring you right back I’m going to pull off some more leaves of the cabbage and bring you right back all right those are all chopped up I’d gotten some more leaves off my cabbage we’re almost done with that I’m going to add the onion to the

Rice it’s our cooked rice there we go yeah we’re getting somewhere with some flavor okay we’re going to put in one pound of ground beef of your choice it doesn’t matter um we’re using a wagu ground beef we use a lot of when we’re making any kind of

It all the time so we can vouch for it for sure now let me go get an Egg and I never like to crack an egg into a dish without putting it into a smaller dish first to check for eggshells the last thing you want to do

When you’re eating cadol is eating a shell all right there we go one egg I’m just going to grab my owls here this is the salt I’m just going to go across it one and two proba a/4 of a teaspoon black pepper same thing then we’re going to add some dried parsley

All till it’s well mixed now I’ve got my baking dish 9 by 13 pretty deep got my mixture here I’ve got my cabbage there I just drained it all on some paper towels so they don’t get our mixture all loose and wet this is really good get down there to the

There all right what are we doing let’s get a plate all right I’ll put that right there I want y’all to be able to see this what we’re going to do is spray our baking dish avocado spray and we’re just going to spray the bottom of this to keep the cabbage rolls from

Sticking there we go let’s grab a leaf it’s a big Leaf there I grab a spoon we’re going to put in about a couple tablespoons one and two here we go bring in the sides I used to remember making these watch my mom make them me

Learning how to make them and then bring the bottom up and just keep pushing in the side sides and then you got a little pocket of goodness there and we’re going to place this seam side down into our baking dish just like that all right

That’s a good Leaf there lay it on your plate we’re going to take two tablespoons of the mixture place it right in the center bring in the sides bring in the bottom bring it to the center and then just kind of roll it all together like that and then we’re going

To place it into our baking dish same side down there you go all right if youall ever made Cabbage Rolls you tell me how you make them make sure you squeeze them in so you can get a lot of them in there now as you’re doing these make sure that the meat

Mixture is not packed too tight in your cabbage leav just kind of keep it Loose that way it Cooks all the way through oh it takes a little bit of time in the oven but let me tell you it’s so worth it starting off the new year with

Something delicious you can make these right now now I’m going to finish these off and then I’m going to bring you back over here show you how we’re going to give these more flavor cuz they got to steam with something mhm squish them where you have room there we

Go think we can get one more in there which is good cuz that’s about all the meat mixture we have all right let’s see what we got this one kind of busted open a little bit that’s fine look at these

Going to do is add in two cans of tomato soup now these what they are 10.75 Oz each can so we’re going to put that in just going to scrape all that excess out we want that flavor of this to soak into the cabbage rolls too and let’s flavor this

Up which we’re going to put in some garlic powder there we go exactly one cup of water black pepper about an e/ of a teaspoon to a/4 of a teaspoon whatever you like to flavor that with and we’re going to put a little bit of salt we got cabbage going on so we

Kind of need to flavor stuff and the rice I forgot the garlic powder let me get it really quick there we go about a qu of a teaspoon going pour this all over our cabbage evenly can y’all see that okay make sure you’re not off cover up all the cabbage rolls with that

Delicious soup mixture here yeah okay perfect beautiful looks yummy I’m going to take a spoon and I’m just going to kind of let that sauce go in between each one there yeah let it soak all the way in just cover this with some foil all right seal it tightly so that they

Can steam inside there I’ve got my oven preheating at 350° we’re going to bake this for about 1 and 1 half to 2 hours wherever you’ll want them I’ll probably come back in one and a half hours and give these a check pull one out just kind of cut into it

And make sure that it is cooked all the way through that meat mixture if it’s still a little pink you can put them back in for another 30 minutes I’ll be back I’m going show you what we’re going to serve these up with okay we pulled

These out of the oven I just let them rest just for a few minutes we’re going to pull a few out of here I’m going to set it up on a plate with some mashed potatoes and gravy and give it a try look at my plate look at

  5. I make them in a similar way, but I add sugar to the tomato topping so it sweetens it and cuts some acid. I also add a can of chopped tomatoes to the sauce

  6. I core my cabbage and stand it on a paper plate and put it in the microwave oven for about 20 minutes on high. SO much easier and no messing around with wet, dripping cabbage leaves! 👍

  7. Happy New Year Catherine. I used to live in Hawaii so I know about fireworks on New Years Eve. I live in SoCal now snd it's not as bad. I have never made cabbage rolls before. These look great and I'd like to try it.

  8. I make mine with sauerkraut and sauerheads if I can find them, but they are very expensive. I usually use just plain cabbage. Cabbage rolls are one of my most favorite dishes. I used raw rice. I serve with kluski fried in bacon grease. Mmmmm

  10. My Grandma ( Polish ) used all ground pork with sautéed onions, minute rice, salt and pepper. Lined the pan with broken leaves and she used tomato soup with stewed tomatoes. Covering the rolls with more leaves and baked them for 1/12 to 2 hrs.

  11. I make mine just like you do. I just use alot more filling in them. I use tomatoe juice, a whole big bottle. I also use alot of garlic powder and salt on top then i add all the rest of the cabbage on top. You have to have that leftover cabbage its delicious!❤😊

  14. I make cabbage rolls, and they are time-consuming, but I just love them. I add a little bit of kraut to the sauce it just gives you a little tang. Try it next time you will love it 😀

  15. Cabbage rolls are delicious! A family favorite! We never cooked the rice, we just added it in raw and it cooked itself in the meat mixture and tomato juice.   16. I make my cabbage rolls in a dutch oven on the stove top. I add all the seasonings to the meat with uncooked rice, roll up and pin with toothpics. I use the water that I boiled the head in as my base. I also add tomatoe soup a little more seasonings and slowly drop rolls into soup. Sometimes I add some sliced carrots for a little something extra. When serving in a large soup bowl you have the cabbage and we like a dollop of sour cream on top. So delicious for a cold day.
