#peppers #top5 #gardening

Hello and welcome back to gap’s Garden we are in the house and as you can see we’ve got a plethora of peppers sitting here in front of me so I’ve been really busy this week harvesting all of the peppers because we are expecting our first Frost if not tonight probably

Tomorrow night or the night after it’s kind of hard to predict our forecast because it always gets a little bit colder here than what they say it should be so we are going to get down to the 30s tonight and over the next couple days and even into the 20s this weekend

So I thought I would go over some of my favorite pepper varieties that I grew this year you may know I like trying different varieties every year and I had quite a few new ones that I tried this year that I really liked and will likely

Grow again I’ll also talk a little bit about what I plan to do with all these Peppers as well as some of the things that I’ve already done with some of the Harvest this year We’re going to start with the sweet peppers I grew quite a few sweet peppers this year I’ve kind of gotten away from growing hot peppers um because I just like the sweet ones so much better and I do a lot more with them so a few of the

Ones that I grew this year this is the candy cane chocolate cherry and it’s got some really pretty striping on it it wasn’t super productive but it was a really cool pepper it had variegated leaves and even the stem here has some variegation on it um here’s one that’s

Not quite ripe so it has some really dark striping on it which is really cool and it’s very sweet a really tasty pepper and then one that I’ve been growing for several years now is Chloe’s Sweet Tangerine so this came from Timothy molrep and this is a kind of a

Cross that he got from a grocery store and has been growing it out and stabilizing it for for several years and this is probably the sweetest pepper that I’ve ever grown it is really really sweet and tasty and this year it wasn’t quite as productive as it usually is for

Some reason but normally it’s a really productive pepper and then these kind of bell-shaped ones this is a cross that I got from my mom it’s called The Bell room it’s a cross between a bell pepper and a mushroom pepper and mushroom peppers have a little bit of heat and

These do have a light heat the ones that I grew last year had a little bit more heat and were orange so it’s a pretty unstable cross I think this was an F3 if I can remember correctly um but I’ll probably try growing it again and I did

Prefer the ones that I grew last year now another really great sweet pepper that I grew this year is this one here and as you can see this basket is completely full of peppers this all came off of one plant it was definitely my most productive sweet pepper this one is called

Jolene’s rustic Italian and the peppers are pretty decent size really sweet and one of my favorites this year I got these seeds from refining fire chilies but I looked on their website and I couldn’t find them on there anymore and I think these might have actually been

Free seeds that I got when I ordered um some orange Lea seeds back in 20122 but I’ll definitely grow these again and we’ll be saving some of those seeds here’s a basket full of another one of my favorite sweet peppers this one is called Aken kaga and I originally got

These feeds from Matsui on Instagram back in I think 2021 and I’ve pretty much been growing these every year since then because they are just so awesome the peppers are just really huge um a lot of them didn’t ripen up but I I’ve picked through the plant pretty much all

Season it’s super productive not quite as productive as jolene’s but still um really productive and one I will definitely keep growing so as you can see I have got a ton of sweet peppers here and I don’t think I could eat them all before they go bad so what I’m

Planning on doing with the sweet peppers is chopping these up and putting them in the freezer so I did that for the first time last year and it worked out really well and I used it all the time for chilies for fried potatoes um just anything that you would use um chopped

Peppers for I grew a few different Mexican Peppers this one is called chilac negro and I have this one in a vase of water because I had quite a few on the plant that were still green so I’m going to see if we can get these to

Ripen in aase of water I’ve had pretty good luck doing that um in the past with some varieties uh but we’ve got these uh when they’re ripe they turn a chocolate brown color so they are a paa type pepper though they don’t look like paas uh but the flavor is very similar so

This is what a paa looks like this one is still a little green so it’s not quite ripe um but we did get quite a few ripe ones off the plant but the chakle seeds I got from farouche peppers on Instagram I’m not sure he’s still on

Instagram though and then the paa seeds I got from Brando toe and here’s what they look like when they’re ripe and dried so I dehydrated these at a pretty low temperature for about a day and we got one bag filled up and this was off of I think just one plant I had

Of this one and then the chule Negros I also dehydrated those and for some reason the chakle Negros I don’t know if you can see that but the the Skins turned kind of a a light brown color I’m not sure if it was supposed to not all

Of them did that so this one is still kind of dark but the majority of them turned light brown which is kind of weird and then the the other Mexican variety that I grew is the guo and this one was by far the most productive I’ve grown the paa and the guio before

Outside of the greenhouse and they did all right they’re pretty slow to ripen but in the greenhouse they just took off and I got a ton of peppers out of them so I dehydrated these and I’ll be able to make lots of Mexican dishes with with

These and I won’t have to buy these from the store for quite a while I won’t have to grow these again for quite a while now this basket is just filled with all of the jalapenos um that I harvested this week and I’ve grew five different varieties I’m not going to go through

All of them but I do want to touch on my two favorite ones so this one is a little bit different shape than most jalapenos it is very large um and is great for stuffing so I made a lot of jalapeno poppers out of these guys and

The the heat on these is fairly mild um so those are really good I’ll probably grow those again and then it’s hard to tell which is which but I think these ones here are the Tam jalapeno which is another favorite that I grew this year it’s a fairly mild jalapeno it’s pretty

Decent sized and I made a ton of cowboy candy already and I’ll probably make some more cowboy candy out of these ones but if you’re not familiar with cowboy candy here is one of the jars that I canned a few months ago so it’s basically candied

Jalapenos and it is super tasty we like using it on Pizza hamburgers hot dogs it’s just a really great condiment my pepper I grow every year and I probably talk about it a lot as being my favorite pepper is the Korean goou now there are several different varieties of Korean

Goou out there and the one in particular that I like to grow I got seeds from Kang star and and he doesn’t know which variety it is but the the peppers are really large um they’re pretty decent heat I’d say A medium level goes come in all different sizes and heat levels but

This one is by far my favorite and the main reason I like this one so much is because it doesn’t really turn very rubbery when it gets ripe and it it you can leave it on the plant for a really long time and I love that because I like

To do my harvests a bunch at a time um I I tried a different variety I don’t know if I have any in here I tried the goopo goou this year and actually it might be these ones here the peppers are a lot smaller and unfortunately they they

Don’t stay very well on the plant once they’re ripe so I’ll probably just continue to keep growing this one that I got from kingstar lastly we have the Tangerine tiger which I’ve got a whole video about this cross in a recent video that I posted but it was developed in my

Greenhouse and it’s believed to be a cross between the AI Tangerine from Susan Garza and the Sugar Rush stripe so the seeds were saved from the AI tangerine and when Elena my friend grew them out they ended up coming out with stripes so that was the the Assumption

Because they were grown right next to each other in my Greenhouse so that makes the most sense but this is a really neat cross uh these were the F4 generation so I’ll be growing F5s next year but there’s still quite a bit of variety in the F4 generation in fact one

Of the peppers that I grew this year turned out to be all red um with like this one and some people have grown all orange ones and one person even grew one with variegated leaves which I’m going to try growing next year but the the all

Red one was all sweet there was no heat at all in the red ones but all the other ones I’ve grown have had at least a little bit of heat and most of them have pretty thick walls I did grow three different plants and they came out with

Three different um fenos one of them had a little bit thinner W skin and had a problem with Blossom and rot so I’m not saving seeds from that one but this one here is the biggest pepper that I’ve harvested and it came in at 31 G I know

Elena grew some really big ones this year too but this is a really great pepper really pretty and kind of a fun one to grow so I do have seeds of this available if anyone’s interested in trying it out um just let me know thought I’d finish the video by talking

About what my top five pepper varieties were for this year and the first one is going to be aen kagwa super tasty super productive and they’re huge so I grow these pretty much every year and then the dto jalapeno so this was my favorite of the jalapeno varieties I grew this

Year because they’re just really large and great for stuffing and then we’ve got the jolene’s rustic Italian this was my most productive sweet pepper by far and a really good one I’ll definitely grow again this was a first for me and then another one that I grow

Every year is the Korean goou so definitely grow that again and again and then finally my Tangerine tiger so this is a super fruity sweet pepper with a little bit of heat and it’s got some fun shapes and you can’t beat those stripes I hope you enjoyed this video if you

Have some favorite pepper varieties let me know what those are I’d love to try them so thanks for watching and we’ll talk to you again soon if you enjoyed this video please like And subscribe you can also find me on Instagram Twitter and Facebook

  1. I am so envious of your harvest! Mine this year was so minuscule. Can't wait for next season. I don't know what i am gonna grow. I need some more seeds for sure. I was debating on joining one of the many seed swaps, but I didn't isolate any for seeds. They all could be crosses. I have an unstable F1 in a grow bag. Flavor is great just no heat.

  2. Thanks for the great video. Very informative. Also, thank you for the seed trade. I look forward to growing the Tangerine Tiger next year.

  3. I love growing Goccia d’oro. They are large and sweet and I grill them. Once I peel them, I put them in a jar and stash in the fridge in their own juices. Wonderful on sandwiches, charcuterie board and anywhere I need to add some oomph. Thanks for the video. I am a fellow PNW gardener in Portland!

  4. Thanks for the seasonal review – always like to hear how other PNW growers have done to compare with. My favorite no-heat varieties are Poivron Long Doux (great for stuffing) and Habanada (great on salads). Another that is somewhat hotter, but still within my range and great for stuffing is the Antep Aci Dolma. I've also been looking for a good Korean gochu variety, and have struck out so far…

  5. The jolene rustic sounds like a nice pepper to grow and will look out for seeds , got some tangerine tiger seeds ( f4 i believe ) and hope to get some nice pheno peppers although knowing my luck they'll all turn out red 🙂
