Homemade Eggnog is easy to make, and it’s made with heavy cream, nutmeg, cinnamon, milk and liquor of your choice or omit altogether if it’s for the kids. This Eggnog recipe is thick, sweet, and creamy with the perfect flavor. Serve it chilled or warmed eggnog is also a delightful treat.

Holiday Eggnog Recipe

Yields: 10 servings

Ingredients:

1 cup granulated sugar
6 egg yolks
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup milk (or more if you like a thinner eggnog as desired)
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
2 ounces of rum (or any liquor of your choice)
2 ounces of bourbon (or any liquor of your choice)
6 egg whites, room temperature (optional)

Directions:

1. In a large bowl, whisk egg yolks and granulated sugar by hand or beat with an electric mixer on minimum speed for about 1 minute or until the egg mixture is thick and fluffy. Set aside.
2. In a saucepan, combine milk, heavy cream, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt, and vanilla. Cook over medium heat stirring occasionally until steaming (not boiling). Remove from heat.
3. Temper the egg mixture by slowly adding 1/2 cup of hot milk, then slowly whisk the rest of the milk into the egg mixture.
4. Pour the egg mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring frequently until the mixture begins to thicken slightly and coats the back of spoon or your desired consistency. Do not boil. The mixture should reach to 160 °F (70°C). Remove from heat.
5. Strain through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl. Whisk in the liquor (rum and bourbon). Let it chill for 1 hour.
6. (This is optional if you want to include egg whites) In a mixing bowl, beat the egg whites with an electric mixer on high speed until they reach nice stiff peaks. Fold it in the eggnog mixture gently, slowly, and carefully. Once done, allow to set for 3 hours in the fridge.
7. Serve with a sprinkle of cinnamon or freshly grated nutmeg.

Note: 1. Eggnog can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to one week.
2. Adding liquor is optional especially for a kid-friendly version.
3. Feel free to increase the rum and bourbon to your heart’s delight.
