    Decent summary of the article:

    >Red wine does contain compounds called polyphenols, some of which can have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
    >
    >But no studies, including decades of research on one polyphenol called resveratrol, have definitively linked the amounts that you get from red wine to good health, Dr. Cho said. And there’s no good evidence that wine is less harmful than other types of alcohol, she added.
    >
    >“That can be really hard to hear,” Dr. Hay acknowledged.
    >
    >Whenever she tells people that she studies the risks of alcohol, “a pall falls over the room,” she said.
    >
    >But Dr. Hay and other researchers are not suggesting a “prohibition” on alcohol, Dr. Hay added. She just wants people to be informed about the risks.

The 60 Minutes broadcast way back in 1991 called The French Paradox linked the French consumption of red wine with lower incidents of cardiovascular disease. It was an absolute boon to the wine industry, but never repeated in any medical study that followed.

I still feel better after a glass of wine.…or two.

I drink 3-4 bottles of red a week. I’m going to live for a very long time right?

A lot of people, and WHO think even a single drop of alcohol is poison and yet they recommend the Mediterranean diet. This diet was adapted from the eating habits of people who live around the Mediterranean Sea who had less disease and longer life spans despite poor medical care all while drinking a glass of wine with dinner. Does it benefit health? Maybe not but I don’t believe it’s the poison some believe it is.

I was reading Tor Kenward’s memoir recently and he mentioned a bunch of personalities in the wine/food industry. The ones that have passed away have mostly passed away at ripe old age (Mondavi, Tchelistcheff, Julia Child, Grgich, etc). I know the sample size is small. And there is survivorship bias here. And I know that these people are wealthy/white/privileged so that may explain their longevity.

My question is can anyone provide a list of winemakers/critics who have died young from heart disease/cancer and other illnesses associated with alcohol?

I enjoy moderate wine consumption but I don’t want it to be at odds with my fitness/health.

According to a NYtimes article from 2022 (based on the latest mendelian randomized studies):

“a typical middle-aged person in the study who did not drink had an estimated 9 percent chance of having coronary heart disease. A person who had one drink a day had an estimated 10.5 percent chance”

If the risk is only higher by 1.5pct then I’m gonna enjoy my one glass per day habit.

alcohol is clearly bad for you, fullstop. the recent studies have all but confirmed this and i’m guessing is one of the reasons why young people are drinking less. not that it will stop any of us wine lovers though! the key is to drink in moderation.

    Alcohol relaxes you.

    That’s it. That’s literally it.

    Modern life is fucking stressful.
