I have only cooked red lentils a handful of times. Each time they’re hard or straight to this. Am I overcooking them?

I’ve only had brown lentils and can’t get over the mealy texture 🤢

Cooked red lentils should be mushy (kinda like a lumpy hummus texture).
Green lentils are in-between mushiness.
Brown lentils retain their shape.
edit: don’t undercook lentils or beans. They can cause bad digestive upset if undercooked! I understand what you mean about losing the nutritional value but overcooking and cooking properly are two different things.

That’s why you use them in dal. They aren’t really something you cook to eat all by themselves, like pintos or black beans. You’ll enjoy them more if you cook them in a saucy way. They’re supposed to be soft.
