Mahalo and thanks for watching!!

Aloha everyone this is Hawaii sple lady today I’m making macaroni salad like the kind you find in the Hawaiian takeout restaurants and the salad is has many people wondering what is a secret to it well I’m going to try to duplicate this and let’s see how it

Comes out now the ingredients are fairly simple except it’s different from regular Mac salads so I’m adding some carrots some onions sugar salt white pepper and the unusual ingredient is this powdered Bonito flakes that uh comes in a package like this it has kelp in it too and you can get it

Online it’s very difficult to find in Chinatown but uh you might be able to get it online and I got this from Hawaii so I brought it with me and it comes in little packages like this the powder and um it’s uh it’s used in many kind of

Foods so here we go so I have here three cups of cooked macaroni and to make all of these uh mix up good I’m going to first put the mayonnaise on this is half a cup of best food mayonnaise this is the kind that is probably the best tasting you can use

Other mayonnaise but this one is really good so let’s put the mayonnaise on and so that it mixes well because it’s a lot of powders I’m going to put the powders on the mayonnaise and then mix it up so I have here um I’m going to have three pinches of each powder

So this is salt one two and three sugar three pinches 1 2 3 white pepper so it doesn’t make it black three pinch two pinches I think enough okay and now the Dashi powder three pinches and you don’t want too much because then it’ll become strong and

Then you’ll say oh how come it’s fishy tasting and then I’m going to put in a teaspoon of grated onions and a teaspoon and a half of grated carrots now I’m going to mix up all of this on the mayonnaise first and then let’s mix it all up with the macaroni

And that’s all there is to it now some of the restaurants they put some tuna and uh sometimes they put some uh celery in it but I chose not to use those things but if you want you can and when they do the tuna it’s just tiny little bits and flakes of it

Okay and this is your finished salad now the best part to taste it it’s about 95% close to the restaurants so it’s really good you got to try it but be careful on the salt maybe start with one pinch then if it’s not enough start with two

Pinches but three pinches maybe a little bit too much and my pinch might have been too big so and Mahala for watching guys see you on the next video

  1. Thank u auntie. I never have been successful making what seemed like such a simple salad but I didn’t know the secret. I usually just get a tub from Zippy’s but when I’m visiting family in the mainland and want to make their favorites, I just can’t get it right. Can’t wait to try it.

  2. Hey–is it possible for you to sponsor a bonito flakes brand for sale? It really is hard and my girls are on the mainland-so even harder to find! Mahalos!!

  3. The mac salad at the local chicken business of my relatives and many other plate lunch kind of places use dry mustard as a special ingredient. Have you tried that?

  4. When I was last in Hawaii, they served a similar side dish on a plate lunch as a potato macaroni salad. Do you think could I just add some boiled potato to the same recipe? Mahalo for this taste of the islands!

  5. My late grandmother’s Hawaiian Potato Mac recipe is the most requested thing at my immediate family’s dinner celebrations. It uses ebi in white vinegar, but bonito flakes sounds good too.

  6. great idea to put dashi in mac salad im going to try that dashi was my moms secret ingred to great hamburger stew😊

  7. Aunty the salt was spilling in when you was pinching it. 😂 Great show I'm a subscriber from Nanakuli Oahu🤙

  8. Thank you for sharing another favorite! I will definitely try adding dashi when making mac salad 👍

  9. Dear Pickle Lady, I love your vids and my favorite is the Lilikoi Chiffon Pie. I have the ingredients and planning to make it today. I would like to have your cookbook. How can I get a copy? Thank you, Claudia

  10. Tragically I don't use Best Foods mayonnaise anymore because at one time it used to be very thick and you were able to turn it upside down and it would not come out of an open jar but now it just runs out and is much more t h i n there are other brands out there that taste like the old best foods you just have to keep finding one

  11. Bonito flakes hard to find in Chinatown??? WTF??? B.S.
Cmon that's the same as saying salt is hard to find in American stores….
    Bonito flakes? Hard to find?
