This time elder aunty’s vegetable garden was not at all flourished. Elder uncle said that it was due to the continuous rain that we are getting! Since the pollen of those little flowers of brinjal, ridge gourd, and bitter gourd washed away due to the continuous rain the harvest have got very low this time it seems! Yet it was a very pleasant and a beautiful sight to see that the okra (ladies’ fingers) trees were filled with lady’s fingers pods.

Elder uncle harvested the okras every once in 3 days. Because they get mature fast! I was asked to pick some of the tender okras repeatedly by elder aunty. But I waited until they harvest the ladies’ fingers by elder uncle as he grow these with utmost care, to sell.

These tender okras are very tasty. Even they can be eaten raw as well and the tender okras seeds gives a milky taste. okras are a versatile vegetable where they can be cooked either as a spicy or white curry, or fried spicy dry vegetable dish as well. But this time I thought of making a different dish out of them by steaming eggs and ladies’ fingers together. Actually my newest innovation went well with cooking melon black coconut curry, spicy beans fry, and beet and cucumber salad for lunch.

Since ladies’ fingers are a cooling vegetable, it is not good to eat them frequently during this rainy season. Because of this reason I didn’t cook them for every meal. I sent the extra okras to my aunty’s and uncle Siriwardena’s home. After two days I made a special different dish for the evening tea! Even our brother had made a very tasty pomegranate tea. When the tea brewed with mint leaves and honey, the flavour was heavenly. What ever it is there was a rich cinnamon flavour as well. But there were no sign of cinnamon at all yet with the okra patties, my brothers pomegranate tea complimented each other like a match made in heaven.

    ලොකුතාත්තා බන්ඩක්ක පලදාව දවස් තුනකට වතාවක් නෙලා ගන්නවා. මොකද බණ්ඩක්කා ඉක්මනටම මෝරනවා. ලොකු අම්ම මගින් මගටම කිව්වා ලපටි කරල් වලින් ටිකක් කපාගෙන යන්න කියල. ඒත් ලොකු තාත්ත ඒව වවන්නෙ විකුණන්න නිසා මම ටික කාලයක් අස්වනු කපනකම් බලන් හිටියා.

    හොදට හැදුනු ලපටි කරල් හරිම රසයි. නිකම්ම වුනත් කන්න පුලුවන්. බන්ඩක්ක ඇට හැපෙද්දි කිරි රහයි. කිරට, මිරිසට, තෙලට මේ ඕන විදියකට බන්ඩක්කා හදන්න පුලුවන්. ඒත් මට හිතුන බන්ඩක්කා බිත්තරත් එක්ක වන්ඩු⁣ටව තම්බල වෙනස් විදියෙ කෑමක් හදන්න. ඒ හදපු එක කැකිරි කලුපොල් මාලුවයි, බොංචි තෙල් දැමුමයි, රතු අල පිපිඤ්ඤා සලාදෙයි එක්ක දවල් කෑමට හොඳටම ගැලපුනා.

    බන්ඩක්කා ශීතාධික කෑමක් නිසා මේ වැහි දවස් වල නිතර නිතර කන්න හොඳ නැහැ. ඒ හින්ද මම හැම කෑම වේලකටම බන්ඩක්කා ඉව්වෙ නැහැ. වැඩිපුර ඒව නැන්දලයි දිහාටයි සිරිවර්ධන මාමමලයි දිහාටයි දුන්නා. දවස් දෙකකට පස්සෙ හවස්වරුවෙ තේවෙලවට කන්න බන්ඩක්කා වලින් ටිකකින් වෙනස් කෑමක් හැදුවා. මල්ලිත් දෙලුම් වලින් රස තේකක් හදල තිබුනා. මීපැණියි මිංචි කොලයි එක්ක දෙලුම් ඇට තැම්බුනාම අමුතුම රසක්. අනේ මන්ද ඒකෙ කුරුඳු රසකුත් යාන්තමට දැනුනා. ඒත් කුරුඳු දාපු බවක් නම් පේන්න තිබුනෙ නෑ. බන්ඩක්කා පැටිස් එකත් එක්ක දෙලුම් තේක හරි හරියට ගැලපුනා.
