Yes, that thinly sliced ratatouille your were eating was not real. The authentic, traditional version has chunks like the version you were in France. 😮😂
As pointed out in the movie, ratatouille is a peasant dish. That’s why the critic ordering it was so strange, but it is later shown that he had come from a working class family.
The ratatouille in the movie was thinly sliced and arranged the way it was because it was made at a 5 star restaurant in France 😂 I’ve never understood why people are surprised that it looked different in the movie, like if you order anything at a fancy enough restaurant you’re going to get some crazy looking version of well known foods
since you’re in Nice, you should try out an Italian restaurant called Boccaccio it’s amazing it’s located in the center of the city. Be careful it kind of gets busy for dinner time.
I’ve been making it provincial style for about 10 years. I’ve never been able to make it confit byaldi style (the style you see in the movie) because I’ve never been able to find yellow zucchini until recently. I’m making it tomorrow and I’m so excited!
If you're still in France I know a lot of awesome addresses in Paris 🙂 do tell if you need a guide. PS: thanks for talking about the real ratatouille 🙂 The one from the movie is in fact called a tian.
I live here! Please go and try typical foods from this city that has a special history ! It's called "cuisine nissarde" (i personally love The Tchitchou restaurant (reservation advised)
Otherwise if you want to get probably the best Napolitana pizza here, go to Les Amoureux and try their specialties you will NOT be disappointed (get there early, they don't take reservations and their shift is short, get there by 6:45pm and you'll be just fine)
It always looked so good in the movie but once I realized that it has alot of squash in it I was like no way absolutely not lol. I can't stand squash, The flavor and texture is just so gross to me for some reason which sucks cause I always wanted to try ratatouille but not anymore 😭
People really missed the part that Colet said it was a peasant dish. After the movie it suddenly became a culinary icon associated with french cooking.

I tried ratatouille and was underwhelmed
It was just tomatoey tasting vegetables, though maybe i have to go france for it to be good.
Wow, can't wait to try both versions one day! Glad to see you're having a great time in France, Inga, I can't wait to go myself one day!

Wasn't the "ratatouille" in the movie actually another dish? Like the name was something else if i remember correctly.
