What’s happened to my seedlings? Did I get bad potting soil?

Properly hardened off seedlings have developed dry tan patches and overall yellowing starting from the bottom, 24 hours after planting out.

The only thing I did different this year was refresh my 20 or 30 gallon containers with a new-to-me but well-regarded brand of potting soil purchased from a supplier who caters to marijuana growers; so I assume they don’t allow any poison to drift through their warehouse.

(“refresh” = mix in some new potting soil with the old. It was a 2 cu ft bag shared among 20 containers)

At first I though it was sun scald so I got new seedlings that the arboretum assured me were hardened off, but it’s happening to them as well.

I know that pesticides can get into the potting soil supply chain from, say, compost that included Roundup-Ready straw, but herbicides usually manifest as deformed new growth.
