Thursday night wine

  1. The usual blind wine drill. I thought both ‘61s were Bordeaux, vs other people thinking they might be northern Rhone, but I guessed ‘82 or ‘83. Great wines especially the Villegeorge, a chateau I’d never heard of, which I thought could have been a first rate Graves! Very nice showing for the Beaucastel Roussanne VV ‘97 as well, which no one could get all that close to; I thought maybe it was a Huet demi-sec. Weirdly it started out showing more oxidized (but still very good, just in that direction) than it finished.

I thought the ‘64 Bilbainas was horribly corked; other people agreed it was off but got some enjoyment out of it. Not me. I brought the ‘86 Stony Hill Gewurztraminer, which one person thought was the wine of the night and everyone else agreed was very good but impossible to place. One taster said right away “this reminds me of old Stony Hill riesling” but as it was bone dry and had some wood, people very reasonably thought white Bordeaux or Burgundy, although there were a couple of vague mentions of gewurz and muscat. Finally, the ‘69 Karthauserhof Kronenberg [in those days they bottled different plots separately] Feinste Auslese showed great. I guessed maybe Saar Spatlese from 1980-2000, so at least I thought correctly that it was Mosel vicinity but not actually Mosel.
