I’m going to tell you about the most
important meeting of my life as some of
you know I lived in China for seven
years working a desk job but dreamed of
starting a beef jerky company one day I
found a networking event and noticed
that one of the speakers was the CEO of
a top five jerky brand in America and he
was actually one of my first
Inspirations I showed up and in a sea of
500 Chinese people myself and the CEO
were the only white American dudes we
stuck out like sore thumbs and
immediately connected and finally set up
a meeting at his office in America I
remember thinking this moment was going
to be my big break and my plan was to
convince him to let me be in charge of
launching his brand in China in
hindsight this was never going to work
he was a Mega millionaire with unlimited
resources I was a broke 25-year-old who
had zero track record but he did say one
thing that I’ll never forget he said I’m
glad you want to start a jerky company
in China and not America when new
companies try to compete with us in
America I always laugh at them I always
laugh at them a comment that was seared
into my brain sometimes I wonder if he
laughed at me when I started Max jerky
honestly the thought of it motivates me
to this day
