After soliciting suggestions yesterday, ended up trying this.
It was the best tri tip I've ever made. Just perfection. Juicy, smoky, beefy, wonderful.
Paired with some farm stand okra (seasoned with a number of spices, turmeric, garam masala, cumin, salt, pepper) and some sweet corn from the same stand, somewhere in SC.

I’ve done this before for family members who liked the idea of brisket, but thought brisket itself was “too fatty”. It turned out pretty good, but Santa Maria style is always better imo.
