2000 Ducru-Beaucaillou opened up so incredibly well after a couple of hours

Wanted to share this as it was one of the greatest transformations in decanter I have had the pleasure of experiencing to date. Aromatic upon opening but felt tight and thin upon an early sip. Lovely nose, blackberry, dark cherry along with a fan of tertiary notes; leather, truffle, french oak hint of unsmoked cigar and dried herbs.

We started drinking properly about an hour later and the the palate opened up beautifully over the next 90 mins showing a real concentration of dark fruits along with beautiful tertiary notes of forest floor, oak/cedar, some tobacco leaf and leather. Nice long finish showing the different layers.

Something further happened after 3 hours in the decanter it opened up even further! So much complexity, balance and length. A real depth and concentration to the fruit and tertiary flavours. Very long. Absolutely stunning!

I’ve had the pleasure of trying quite a few 2000 vintage wines from various top Bordeaux estates and I think this is my second favourite to date (after Haut-Brion), beating out even the likes of Latour, La Mission and Cos etc. I think it was my first full bottle of Ducru Beaucaillou, so consider me a convert.

I love mature classified Bordeaux… cheers!

This is one of the most memorable wines I’ve ever tasted, a real showstopper. So unapologetic about its tobacco, smoke, and leather in your face but still enough fruit and complexity to round it out.
