I went to dinner on Saturday with my brother and dad when one of my dad’s friends invited himself but we gladly welcomed him when he mentioned what he was brining. We also had a 1988 Krug, 1996 Lafite Rothschild, a 1985 Chave Hermitage. Not pictured is a 1971 Chateau D’yquem.

1988 Krug Champagne – Slightly materized nose with notes of brioche. The palate was still lively with decent efflorescence and notes of apricot, toasted brioche and Honeycrisp apple. The wine was impressive given the age. It was still full-bodied with a lovely caramel finish.

1988 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche – once in a lifetime experience and one of the greatest wines I have ever had… Bouquet of Asian spices, dried herbs, leather and damp earth. The balance was simply perfect! The flavors continued to evolve in the glass and opened up to feature red and black fruits, black tea and a hint of clove. The finish was a bit short, but given the age, it was certainly expected to fall off quickly.

1996 Chateau Lafite Rothschild – Wow – this wine is remarkably deep in color considering that it is now 28 years in age. The bouquet is classic Pauillac with pencil shavings, dark cherry and black plums. The balance is sheer perfection with power and elegance. Flavors of ripe blackberry and boysenberry fruit, baking spices, and a touch of dusty tannins on the long, graceful finish. I think this wine continue to evolve for another 10- 15 years.

1985 JL Chave Hermitage – this is a lovely wine that is drinking perfectly. Luxurious and still refined, with awesome cassis and blackberry fruit, flowers, rose petal and hints of rendered bacon fat, it is full-bodied, textured and layered on the palate, with no hard edges and killer length on the finish. This beauty is drinking at it’s peak right now and was my favorite of the night.

  2. Friends with a 1971 d’Yquem?

Wanna trade friends? I’ve got a couple spares. Great bundle deal. They can’t even pronounce Sauternes but I can guarantee they’ll always bring an imported six pack of beer to any event.

    Edit – a 1988 DRC too? Christ.
