They say that what killed Merlot was growing the grapes in climates and soils not suited for it. For decades now, producers in the Argentine Patagonia have known that Merlot is probably one of the most succesful grapes to grow in the region. This one in particular is by Swiss winemaker Dieter Meier, made with grapes from the oldest winemaking area on the shores of the Negro river, near the industrial centre of General Roca.
Bone dry, intense acidity, lots of that gorgeous perfumed black & blue fruit that good Merlot gives us. At least in my nose, there are some red wines where the violet/lavender notes seem to intermix with the fruit aromas. There’s a clear layer of minty herbs such as eucalyptus, at times fresh wintergreen; white pepper and some dark chocolate. Quite a bit of clay pot mineral notes, as well as a very delicate dried rose petal note.
Soft, silky tannins, somewhat noticeable alcohol. Great QPR at about $15, within Argentina.
