Dr Bombay has redeemed themselves! Peanut Butter Jelly Time is a major step up from the dry mouth Bonus Track Brownie

Many of you are skeptical about the new summer releases of Dr Bombay ice cream due to conflicting reviews. Saying this as someone who negatively reviewed a prior collection Dr Bombay ice cream, Bonus Track Brownie, I enjoyed their new Peanut Butter Jelly Time.

I wasn’t sorely disappointed, but agreed that there was a distinct dry texture to the vanilla ice cream base (which one described as “cloudmouth” in sensation) that was uniquely off-putting. Another Dr Bombay ice cream (the cookie dough, also with vanilla base) was on clearance, and I wasn’t tempted.

I wrote to Dr Bombay of the issue, and they kindly sent me a free ice cream coupon, and two other coupons. Today was the last day of the coupon expiration, so I had to try one. (Note: it did take going to customer service to apply the coupon, as self check out wouldn’t accept it. Even then there were redemption issues, resulting in override.)

Peanut Butter Jelly Time

Description: ”Grape Jelly sherbet and peanut butter ice cream with peanut butter chips and a grape jelly swirl.” This is an accurate description with all components reflected in the ice cream.

• Grape jelly sherbet: I thought this would be like an ice, but it’s not. It’s sherbet, as described, like a light ice cream that’s still creamy. The taste isn’t really grape jelly so much as it is grape soda. It really reminded me of grape flavor freeze pops (pictured). It’s concentrated, almost fizzy in taste. People have said it’s a very overpowering flavor, but I see it as bright, punchy.
• Peanut butter ice cream: Similar taste to Skippys creamy peanut butter, but lighter. I believe ice cream reviewer Tami Dunn on YouTube said it reminded her of peanut butter cookie, and I agree. It’s a soft, light peanut butter taste, but still nutty and buttery. I particularly enjoyed the thicker consistency like more premium ice cream. A nice change from the poor, airy and gritty taste of the Bonus Track Brownie.
• Peanut butter chips: these are flat, short chips, like flakes. Have a nice lightly crunchy texture.
• Grape jelly swirl: My favorite part of the ice cream! It’s like a thicker syrup, not quite a jam, gooey. There wasn’t a whole lot of it but the flavor was concentrated, and the grape sherbet was concentrated, so I didn’t need much anyway. Flavor is very much grape jelly, like Smuckers Concord grape. It’s got a depth that was perfect with the peanut butter but a candy brightness that also complemented the grape sherbet. Saying that, this is your typical grape jelly flavor, nothing really special about it.

RATING: 9/10! This is such a fun ice cream/sherbet combo that is nostalgic like a poor person’s peanut butter jelly sandwich that just hits all the satisfying notes for a childhood lunch: it’s sweet, nearly fizzy, it’s gooey, passes as a lunch but is pretty much candy. If you preferred “all natural” roasted peanut butter or expensive jams from organic food stores as a kid, you won’t find that here. This is poor person lunch haven. And I’m here for it!

I haven’t tried anything like Dr Bombay Peanut Butter Jelly Time, so here are just some fun ice cream with bright flavors (and also colors) I’ve enjoyed.
* Kroger Private Selection – Maine Blueberry Belgian Waffle Cone. If you want a thick blueberry jam that tastes like real blueberry! Maple flavor ice cream and crunchy waffle cone pieces. One of my absolute favorites!
* Perry’s – Super Hero ice cream. Tastes a bit chemical-y at first, but melds into the nostalgia of eating a SpongeBob ice cream pop from the neighborhood ice cream truck.
* Perry’s – Key Lime Pie. It’s gel-like frozen yogurt with pie crust pieces.
* Giant Eagle Market District – Cereal Bowl. It’s a seasonal summer flavor with corn flakes and blue marshmallow swirl.
* Ben and Jerry’s – Phish Food. It’s gooey marshmallow fun!
* Kroger Private Selection – Amaretto Cherry Cordial. Maraschino cherries!
