I was gifted a beautiful molcajete by an in-law. I want to use it, but before I do, I want to verify that it’s real, as I know cement can be dangerous. I scratched it with my fingernail; it didn’t leave any marks. I noticed what kind of smell it smelled like, sulfur but a bit like ash too. There are two marks on the bottom (DX DX); not sure what that means. It’s also very heavy. It also appears to hold water. Thanks; sorry if this is an annoying question. I’m dating a Mexican and am unfamiliar with these.

As someone who was a food safety specialist for several years, and worked in restaurants for 20 years, my biggest concern would be all of the small holes. If not cleaned properly those could hold bits of food and become contaminated, contaminating whatever you make in it.

Air bubbles are generally a good sign of natural stone. Although air entrained concrete does exist, we haven’t seen fakers get that sophisticated yet.
