I have noticed this green flame twice now when grilling. What could be causing this? Bad charcoal? The grates? Is it safe???

Copper residues and other impurities/contaminants will burn blue/green. Other stuff burns other colors. Same science that goes into [coloring fireworks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrotechnic_colorant).

Is that an aftermarket grill grate? I would be concerned about the metal surface burning off.
But there are multiple metals that burn in that green shade

You are burning off the protection layer off of your grid
