    Hello bakers!

This was my belated Valentine’s Day cake. Not my best work, but that’s what happens when you have to use ingredient substitutions. It’s my fault for not preparing better. Womp womp.

Cake is supposed to be a red velvet cake, but I only had the dark dutch-processed cocoa powder, rather than the usual lighter cocoa, so the color ain’t right, unfortunately. Oh, and I didn’t have buttermilk either. Cake tastes ok, not super thrilled with the recipe, but that could be due to the buttermilk substitution. I’ll have to try it again and maybe some other recipes too. It didn’t help that I definitely over mixed it and deflated the batter. I was shocked that it didn’t crack when rolling.

I found an edible lace mold at my local thrift store, so I just had to try it! Only to realize that I needed some specialty items like Tylose powder, which are not available at my local grocery store. So I ended up trying a 3 ingredient recipe (3 to 5 ratio of cornstarch to white sugar in water) which worked ok, but required a full overnight to dry enough to handle. I also definitely need white food coloring for it. It looks ok in the photos, but it looked like a snake skin shed up close – creepily translucent, haha!

Anywho, it’s definitely time that I find a specialty baking store for some specialty items. I’m open to suggestions if y’all have any favorites!

    Happy baking!

Your thrift store sells edible items like in a grocery section ?

For a cake where it sounds like everything went wrong, this looks incredible! Well done!
