So, this is actually the very first cake I've made in years. When I was a teenager, I took a cake decorating class for fun with my mom, however, I've been out of the game for a long time and felt super rusty. I'm pretty much just an online lurker, UNTIL NOW that is lol. After getting a few quotes for my daughters birthday cake, I decided to give it another shot…
I was super worried it wouldn't turn out and I didn't want to wing it completely so I made just one very short layer to test out all my techniques a few days before her actual birthday where the plan is to make a 2 or 3 layers with some filling for her birthday party. So here's my practice birthday cake! Yum! π
I think it came out pretty nice! I was pleasantly surprised with the overall finished result but to be honest, I am well aware I need LOTS of practice keeping my flowers uniform (also on her actual cake, I think I will make them two tone in color, just for some added flair.) The lettering I did with a tipless piping bag that I mistakenly made way too tiny causing me to quickly realize that I should've used my lettering pen thing because its way too sloppy this way.
Also, I attempted doing zebra stripes on the inside. π€¦π½ββοΈ I think I got the motion down but the intensity of the colors just isn't there, whatsoever. I used gel food coloring but I think maybe the powder would work better? Or even just a lot more gel? It was supposed to be white, pink + black on the inside but obviously it's not. That's really the biggest flop I came across throughout this project.
On that note, seriously, any tips, tricks, constructive feedback, etc is very welcome! I just wanted to share it because I am super proud of it, flaws and all haha. I had a lot of fun making it plus I'm feeling so much more confident heading towards my little wild one's big day! π§

Nice work be sure to keep us updated!!!
Loving the little flowers, they look great! Good luck with the real cake!
Americolor or Chefmaster gels for a good quality food coloring.
But I’d say you did a lovely job for the practice cake. Keep at it, especially if you are determined to do the cake yourself. Enjoy your labor of love π
Edit to add: I misread about the layers π, but you could do a marble and use black cocoa with the chocolate part and black food coloring and the vanilla part with swirl of pink and white. Good luck!
Good job. Canβt wait to see the bday cake.
How did you do the spots?
My only tips are to use 15 or 17 flowers, even numbers aren’t typically ok. It goes back to floral arranging, and I know about a dozen roses, but other flowers are typically odd number especially on a cake. And center your hand writing. Like literally pretend write and make sure you have equal amount of cake on either side of the lettering. The rest is great
It looks great! The buttercream looks a little soft for the roses so they flattened out a bit. The theme is so cute, very creative!
It looks great, and I love the giraffe spots! ππΌ
