For a 9 year old, it’s not terrible. Keep it up 👍
Well, if your happy that is ALL that matters! Cake? Pie? Exactly what is it?
Hell, I thought it said “Cig”
Happy birthday!
Please don’t give up on baking. It is a lot more difficult than most think. Some people on here make it look so simple. I am happy you tried. Keep going and you will surprise yourself. Just trying something new proves you have a desire and that alone gives you a leg up. You should be proud.
I don’t think that cake is cooked lol but next time you have to wait for the cake to completely cool before icing it it melts the buttercream!
🩷 The first time you do anything can be a little tough. New hobbies are good for the mind and soul. Keep baking! You’ll look back in a few months and be amazed at your progress!
not to be mean, but it’s kind of impressive how many things are wrong with this bake. happy you’re happy with it tho!! if you enjoyed making it definitely try again because you can only improve from here 🙂
Practice makes perfect, as they say. Doesn’t even have to be perfect if you’re happy with it. 🎉🎂💕
If you are finding joy in baking, who is anyone to steal that joy? Keep on practicing and keep on posting. I’m hungry now. Thanks OP 🙄😉
Happy birthday! Stick to it. You’ll improve with every mistake you make
I remember some of my first cakes…i tried to put on the frosting while it was still warm and it all fell apart and then i smooshed it together and said it was a chocolate volcano lol
We all gotta start somewhere!! I’ve found baking is like a chemistry experiment, you gotta follow the directions as exactly as possible.
Also, what does it say?
Trying new things can be daunting and exciting in equal measure. It’s great that you’ve given it a try and from my own experience I can tell you that it gets better with each time. Baking and cake decorating are things that can be learned with practice. We all started somewhere, it’s great you’ve made the first step. All the best for your future bakes! And if you have questions, this sub and r/baking are great for advice too.
Gotta start somewhere! I’ve been baking forever and I still can’t decorate for shit. Tastes good though!
I’m really proud of you for making this! Baking takes effort, and you did a great job.
Everyone starts somewhere! Keep going!
Everyone has to start somewhere. Just keep trying. Anyone that makes fun of you has never tried to do it themselves.
Happy Birthday! I hope you had fun making it and that you keep baking!
Be proud and keep practicing ☺️
I like the colors. Yes keep baking!
Congratulations! You did amazingly well and I’m so proud of you! Baking is hard.
I wanted to share my decorating journey, to encourage your developing talent. With practice, you’ll absolutely get there one day!
One of my favorite websites it’s Preppy Kitchen, he has amazing videos and they’ve taught me a lot!

Vs a cake (and macaroons) I did for my cousin’s baby shower a few years ago. I’m not a professional by any means, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come!

There is SO MUCH that goes into baking! It’s a true science, a tasty chemistry lab. You did amazing for your *very first time*, I hope you are SO proud!
Definitely peruse the various baking subs – there are SO MANY, and you’ll just pick up a lot of knowledge as you do! Like when to use room temp butter versus refrigerator cold, or how to mix buttercream so it’s smooth and pipes easily.
None of this is inherent, it’s all a skill one must develop. You got this!
You should be proud! You are starting to build a new skill and that’s awesome. So many people are too scared of looking bad to ever try anything new, but the fact is that baking is hard and the only way to learn is to practice. Congratulations on your first cake!
My first bakes were AWFUL. I remember once I tried to make frosting with granular sugar instead of powdered 🤭 I’m happy for you for trying something new, keep it up!
You did great!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Go you! Cakes are surprisingly difficult to decorate. Mine are always ugly but it’s ok. Because CAKE!
Everyone starts at the same place.
Keep going and don’t be discouraged.
Any cake is a good cake! There’s honestly a lot of moving parts in learning cakes if you’re making everything from scratch (making icing, baking the cake, making sure everything is the right temp, decorating/piping) so don’t sell yourself short!
If you are open to some tips:
– for homemade buttercream you have to REALLY make sure the butter is room temp. Like wait until you think it is and then wait another hour lol. And beat the hell out of it before you add anything.
– There are easier ways to do stuff if you’re just starting. tbh I make cakes for myself and family (for free) so I focus more on the decorating. I make frosting with whipping cream and pudding mix as an easy stable and INCREDIBLY pipe-able whipped cream icing. I also use boxed cake mix because I can’t be bothered. You can even ask to buy undecorated cake from some grocery store bakeries.
– Make sure your cake is completely cooled before decorating! This is a crucial one. Even throwing it in the freezer for a few minutes makes a huge difference (I went the quick and dirty route of learning to decorate at a grocery store so I actually prefer to decorate cakes when frozen).
– Have fun! Try to recreate a cake you love on Pinterest! Make a cake for a friend! Most people (who are worth keeping around lol) appreciate any cake! Because cake decorating is hard lol
Everybody has to start somewhere! Give it time, and practice your craft.
The clumps? Just butter that didn’t combine and cooled back down. The texture of the cake? It’s “stodgy” meaning all you did was over mix it a lot 🤷🏽♀️ simple mistakes that even well seasoned bakers do from time to time. Keep going! Go slow (I know it’s hard baking is very exciting and tons of fun) & if you want to get some info on how to get the butter to combine better or how to know when to stop mixing I find YouTube helps when researching new recipes 🙂 as for decorating…… it’s learned skill that I am still learning myself 😅
Everyone starts with no skills, doesnt matter what you are trying to do, everyone starts at 0 and learns. I think its an awesome first attempt and looks delicious. My first one probably looked far worse, and after 50+ years baking I am nowhere near the skill level of some of the cakes seen on this sub. Keep going, keep practicing, I am sure you will have no shortage of people willing to try your cakes so you can get more practice in.
Everyone has to start somewhere. Once you start to produce amazing works of edible art, you’ll look back at this & laugh.
Happy Birthday!!! You did great.
I love this and your pride. I laughed hard, not at the cake, but with the cake. Enjoy the blunders. Each cake is a lesson. Once you’ve perfected some recipes, you’ll still get some blunders. I love how open you are about this 🩷🩷🩷
Do not give up!
I have absolutely NO experience and was hired to be trained a cake decorator at my job. It is WAY harder than it look, and I do abstract art! It is NOTHING like a canvas. This is amazing for your first time. I’m six month in and STILL working on smoothing! The finesse will come! ♡♡♡ AND I BET IT TASTE AMAZING!
I practiced pipping by drawing lines on cardboard, taping wax paper down, and going over the straight and circle lines.
I thought this was going to be a covid 19 theme cake.
Hey, you got the bug, welcome! Cakes are so fun because in the end, they just get eaten anyway and you move on to the next one. I’ve made some interesting cakes, some not great, and some downright amazing cakes. All were fun!
Keep up the good work and don’t be disheartened! Everyone starts somewhere. There are so many instructional vids online for free. Also for decorating practice purchase styrofoam cake rounds and make crisco frosting. It lasts forever and you can scrape it off the dummies to reuse later. 😁
I’m so glad you’re proud of yourself! I hope it was delicious! If you had fun then keep at it!! We all started somewhere with trial and error!! I’m lucky enough to work at a bakery so someone else does the hard work and I just make it pretty. Idk if I could do it all myself and not get frustrated and give up! Amazing first go at it!
Check out preppykitchen.com for cakes—his are really easy and he gives amazing educational advice on tools and technique
everyone has to start somewhere, and we learn from our past mistakes. now you know how to improve for next time! keep going!
Happy birthday!
Better than I could do I’m sure! It’s beautiful!
Happy birthday! It’s such a lovely thing to take up a new hobby. Taking pride in your work is so important, and just the fact that you are proud of it makes it a perfect cake to me 🌸🥰
It’s my birthday too, happy birthday!!! Enjoy your cake 🎂🎉💕
You can also practice on plates or cardboard cake rounds
You did awesome. You can’t compare yourself to other people with more experience, you just can’t.
#You either win, or you learn, and learning is winning!
Looks a helluva better than my first one. I think you’ve got the right idea! The fact you got it out of the cake pan at all in one piece is impressive–I still struggle that to be honest. Keep it up!
