Got this back in Lisbon in 2023 and realised it was already out of date by 3 years at the time.
Just wondering if it would really expire as it is tinned.

It’s a “best before” not a “use by”. As long as the can isn’t damaged is give it a go!

Personally, I would open it and see. Canned stuff tends to keep for a really long time if not damaged or exposed to too much heat or frozen.
That said, who knows what happened to it over the years so, you’re on your own.

I say give it a go, I’m willing to risk you.

It should be fine. Also the woman on the front looks like a GTA character.

Vintage canned fish is a gourmet thing – REALLY. And the date on the can is a best-by date.
As long as the can is not damaged or the seal compromised (obvious by visual inspection) you can eat that tin 10 years from now and be fine.

Canned food doesn’t really expire. People eat MREs from the 1940s and are fine.
NiobiumThorn
I’m afraid so.
You have 1 minute – 100 years to live. My condolences

i mean, eventually, at some point, yes, but you will also die if you don’t

From the very conservative about these things USDA: “Most shelf-stable foods are safe indefinitely. In fact, canned goods will last for years, as long as the can itself is in good condition (no rust, dents, or swelling).”
Examine the can. Rust or swelling is a major red flag. Minor and medium dents less so.
Five year old can? No problem. Any food dated March 2020? Definitely jynxed 😆

Tricana is the best! Really good quality from Portugal… Canned food lasts forever!

That is also an old family old cannery in Portugal

Have you heard of Steve1989MREInfo? I think you’ll be fine.
For context: He eats old MREs and has ate Civil War hardtack.

Expiration dates are mandatory. I hate them

Is the can bloated or rusty? If in doubt, throw it away. Otherwise, open it, smell it and taste it. Canned fish is a fully preserved product. Nothing will happen quickly. Collectors sometimes pay a lot of money for older cans.

Yes. Now, whether this can of fish will be the cause of your death is another question.

Let’s get this out on the tray. Nice.

Throw it away, food poisoning is not a joke
Don’t report back if you die.
