Apologies in advance for the stupid question, but I wanted to check in with those who use a gas grill.
I bought my first ever propane tank yesterday (being used in a fire table) and noticed this faint hissing noise anytime the flames were turned on (no noise when gas is on without flames ignited). Internet research told me any hissing noise is a big problem, so I exchanged the tank assuming it was faulty.
However, the new tank is making the exact same noise. Is this just the normal sound of gas passing through a regulator? You can see the soapy water on the connections in my video and there are no bubbles at all.

Ok when gas nozzle (that one with the open fire) is working.
Also there is a gas pressure reductor (regulator).
So you just hear a high speed of gas proceding throught tiny canal inside of the system.
“Wash” it with a soap foam, it will help you to understand its tightness.
This is normal operation.
Of course a gas under such immense pressure that it is a liquid would make a faint noise as it’s slowly exiting a small valve. See also: balloon.
Try screwing the hose on tighter? Or buy a new hose.
Spray the part where the hoes connects to the tank with soapy water. You want to check for leaks. The same goes for the end that goes into the gas grill. If things are good there, check your burners. Are they producing high heat? I know my 2 gas grills do not produce any noise when the valved is turned all the way on. I did have to replace a bad hose because the regulator was restricting the flow of propane through the hose causing the fire output to be low.
Spray soapy water,(dishsoap) and look for bubbles. sometimes its just noise, other times it can be the hose or a little rubber gasket that is inside the gastank valve, tank may need to be replaced.
Hey, my first ever tank was brand new and was silent. My second and current one sounds exactly like this. Sent several videos to friends etc. to clarify and they said it’s normal. I do the soapy water spray test and nothing came of that. It should be fine!
I think it’s normal but I asked the almighty chatGPT anyways and here’s what it says:
Yes, a faint hissing sound when the flames are on is normal—it’s just the sound of propane flowing through the regulator and burners. If there’s no hissing when the gas is on but not ignited, and you’ve confirmed with a soapy water test that there are no leaks, then there’s no issue. The warning about hissing typically applies to gas leaks, which would be present even when the burner is off. Since you’re only hearing it when the fire table is in use, you’re good to go!
