I've had quite a few different brands of boneless/skinless mackerel fillets, but now that I've had a couple cans of these Jose Gourmet whole, small mackerel, I am really preferring the latter. These have a sturdier meat with good texture and seem to have richer flavor, too. Any other brands of whole mackerel I should try? I don't see many out there compared to the fillets.

I rarely eat Sardine fillets but for mackerel there are just so many good tins that are fillets. With that said, the Jose Gourmet spiced small mackerel in olive oil is the only whole mackerel tin I’ve found so far that I actually like even more than these Jose small mack. The Nuri whole spiced mack are good too but the Jose spiced mack are much better even in my opinion. The Nuri are probably a buck or 2 less. The 2 Jose Gourmet are elite mackerel tins though, tough to beat. I haven’t tried the Jose Gourmet smoked small mack tin yet but I have a tin of it on my shelf and now my mouth is watering so maybe I’ll try it tomorrow and let you know if it’s just as good as those other 2.
Is there a noticeable flavor difference between these small mackerel and sardines?
The Real Conserva small boys are mighty fine, too. https://rtg.fish/product/real-conservera-small-whole-mackerel-caballitas-in-olive-oil/
They’re filets, not whole, but the Angelo Parodi mackerel is really great. They’ve got some fat content that makes the texture very luxurious. I actually bought them by mistake (sgombro in Italian), thinking they were sardines. I’ve never been a huge fan of mackerel but they’ve changed my mind.
