Wait…what? It should be more like salty bubble tea bubbles

So this is Romanoff lumpfish caviar. Not the real stuff but a substitute. They’re a fun garnish.
Pretty good to put on sardines that seem to lack salt.

This kind of caviar comes from fish other than sturgeon, which is what the famous “beluga” caviar is made from. I think this is made from lumpfish roe, a fish so ugly it’s cute.

Don’t know what to tell you, friend: that’s not caviar. It’s lumpfish roe, which is as salty as all hell, very fishy, and not very much like caviar at all.
If you want something that’s much closer to real caviar, but more affordable, try paddlefish roe; it’s closely related to the sturgeon and the roe is really excellent. Real caviar is bliss, though, and I hope you can try some one day.
fish eggs taste like fish. now you have the cheat code to life

That’s lumpfish caviar, inexpensive roe. I’ve had lumpfish as well as conventional caviar from sturgeon and it never tasted like sardines to me.

Yeah caviar sucks dude lol I had my fair share of all the top quality stuff working in restaurants and I wouldn’t recommend anyone waste the money for it, but one man’s yuck is another man’s yum 🤷🏻♂️

Put that on a cracka dood
Maybe with some cream cheese?
I like the salmon ones better but those are good. Also good on eggs, i use it sparingly so it lasts forever.

No, it does not taste the same. You bought bad caviar

Not caviar, if you want decent caviar you can order directly from Petrossian – that’s what I do for my champagne tastings and it’s always fantastic.

Have you tried salmon roe or smelt roe? That’s candy to me. I like to get them when I’m at a sushi restaurant.

Ya so when you get to better caviars, you’re gonna get more complex/more interesting flavors.
Things you SHOULD be picking up on when you get to the good stuff:
-Texture: not crunchy, pleasant pop, not mushy/soupy, rich mouthfeel. The more expensive, the larger the pearl, with the exception of Salmon Caviar which are always big but pretty inexpensive.
-Flavor: salted (NOT SALTY), mild notes of fish (NOT FISHY).

It you are exploring cheap roe and have a world market near you they should have a super cheap smoked trout roe. Try it, it’s really tasty! It’s great with a dry sparkling wine (Trader Joe’s brut ftw) or frozen vodka and potato chips (dry champagne or vodka are both great with super salty foods). My husband and I call it “trashy fancy night” lol.
I’ve tried this brand of lumpfish roe and thought it tasted exactly like cheap salty sardines as well lol. It’s not real caviar but It’s still fun to try something new, and if you don’t like it now you know. If you get the chance to try the expensive stuff, don’t let this experience deter you!

Caviar exists in a variety of forms and can come from a variety of fish or even kelp. The stuff that people think of when they hear “caviar” is sturgeon caviar which is very expensive. It tastes like a salty, briny boba pearl. What you have is lumpfish which is going to taste fishier and be more affordable. Salmon roe, flying fish roe, and smelt eggs are also affordable and have a different taste. In general, good caviar regardless of price or origin should be briny, have a clear pop, and should not leave a lingering fishy taste or aroma in the mouth.

real sturgeon caviar (on the right vessel, like a delicately boiled quail egg) is absolutely astonishing

Ummmmmm no
Salty and fishy.
Seconding everyone. That’s the caviar you can get at [Kroger](https://www.kroger.com/p/romanoff-black-lumpfish-caviar/0007020023000?fulfillment=PICKUP). It’s not actual caviar. A decent beginning caviar is usually around $90 USD, although paddlefish roe (also recommended) is cheaper.
but not kroger cheap.
