WASHINGTON (7News) — As March is Maryland Wine Month, Melissa Aellen, third-generation vintner and founder of Simple Theory Wine Lounge, joined Good Morning Washington, presenting some of her locally crafted wines.

In 1976, Aellen’s grandparents started a winery. Since then, Aellen and her cousin have created Simple Theory Wine Co, with a newly opened lounge in downtown Frederick, carrying the legacy of family vintners.

As the recently elected President of the Maryland Wineries Association, with over 100 wineries in the area, Aellen hopes to remind folks that there are local wines right around the corner. “It’s not something that you can only get from Europe or California. There’s wine right outside your back door,” said Aellen.

Aellen showcased a bottle of her Albariño. While it is a Spanish wine, the grapes were grown locally in Maryland. “The grape itself carries certain characteristics, no matter where you plant it in the world,” said Aellen. However, she described the importance of having a sense of place in the wine tasting world. “It’s a Spanish grape, but it’s grown here in Maryland, which will be different than anything you try from Spain.”
