A popular teriyaki sauce brand has recalled hundreds of bottles of the product following observations of bubbling and swelling containers in the shelf-stable sauce, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
The affected “Red Shell Foods, Inc.” products, which include 12-ounce and 1-gallon bottles, were primarily sold in California, the administration said in an online fact sheet.
The company began the recall on March 17, after it was determined that the sauce possibly contained microbial growth that would be unsafe to consume.
The recall encompasses 933, 12-ounce bottles with the UPC number 0-18529-10001-9 and 48 1-gallon bottles with the UPC number 0-18529-10505-6.
All of the Red Shell branded teriyaki sauce is from the lot number 120326, which also serves as the best-by date printed on the container, according to the administration.
The sauce, which is meant to be refrigerated after opening, has been classified as a Class II recall by the FDA.
The Class II recall indicates that the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, with the likelihood of serious complications being slim.
Consumers who have purchased the affected teriyaki sauce are advised to dispose of the product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
