I’d be worried about that to be honest. Don’t want a big kaboom.

Depends.. what are you cooking?

It’s having an identity crisis. Is it a grill for searing, or is it a slow cooker?
Do be careful to burp it when opening when this is going on. If you’ve never been hit with the giant ball of fire/smoke, this is one of the conditions that triggers it. Little burps to let the smoke out until it is mostly gone before you open all the way.

Sometimes that means it’s on fire and not getting enough oxygen.
Life_Estimate2755
So what specifically did you use for fuel? Is this lump charcoal, briquettes or wood? If a combo, specifically what and how much of each? It looks like the smoke is soooo overpowering it can’t escape.

I think I’d open the bottom and top vent all the way and wait for it to normalize. I would not open it right now. And I would burp it when I finally do open it.
What charcoal is in there ?
PickaDillDot
Seems like it’s starved for oxygen, pushing and pulling from both vents. I’d be real careful introducing oxygen.

These vaping tricks are getting out of control.
For real though, grease dripping from the rack? Wet coal maybe?
Farts_Are_Funn
I have seen that happen when I let the fire get a little too big and try to lower the fire with the top vent. The fire is not venting properly, you need to open the top vent more (quite a bit in this case) and get the draft going again in the right direction. Then set your bottom vent where you want it for the temp you want and wait for the fire to come down a bit. Then you can put the top vent where you want. This will take some time.
If the temp is really getting out of control, shut both vents completely for a few minutes to calm the fire. Then set the bottom vent where you want it and the top vent open a little more than you probably want. It should start drafting properly, and after 10-15 minutes you can reset the top vent where you want.
The airflow thru these grills is pretty intense. I’ve actually heard it at times when shutting the grill down when I’m done. As long as you follow the basic principle that the top vent is open more than the bottom vent, in a normal well-established fire, this shouldn’t happen. It’s only when trying the change (usually lower) the fire you can see weird stuff like this.

I’ve not seen this, but I would shut the top and bottom vents. That looks like too much fuel and not enough oxygen.
I have a Big Green Egg and I always use a computer and fan to control he pit temp and meat temp. I only use BzGE lump charcoal and never too much fuel. I use this from BBQ Guru.
I call them Kamado farts. It’s full of “gas” / smoke, and it’s burping & farting.
Smokeeater77
Not enough air. It’s attempting to backdraft… the puffing air is a classic sign of a back draft in a structure. The interior is hot, but there isn’t enough oxygen to free burn. The fire attempts to pull in fresh air, then puffs it back out. Not sure on your temps or what you’re aiming for, but I wouldn’t be concerned.
Disastrous-Trust-863
I’d make sure you burp it before opening!
