Lorain native Royal Fennell, owner of Breakthrough Kitchen, uses authentic recipes that showcase the flavors of the community.

Breakthrough Kitchen opened in August 2024 at the American Legion Post 30, 112 W. Erie Ave. in Lorain.

The kitchen operates as a “ghost kitchen” where customers can place pick up orders or dine in at the Post.

Fennell said he also took over the post’s previous kitchen.

“I’m taking their existing operation and analyzing it to see if I can execute my own type of business,” he said. “Since I’ve been here, I’ve been able to shed light on a lot of their needs and make some great food.”

Fennell said the kitchen has a reserve menu where customers can request specialty items, including fruit salads and a Lorain favorite, pastelillos.

“I’m just taking my own recipes, my own styles, things that I’ve grown up cooking and making them here,” he said. “I grew up in Lorain, so I’m very familiar with the food and the community.”

Fennell said it was important for him to open the kitchen at the American Legion Post 30 due to the impact it has had on the community.

“Last year, the Post gave well over $200,000 in donations, and to hear they have to spend an arm and a leg to get catering, I knew I wanted to help,” he said. “People have to understand that every dollar they spend here, allows this organization to give back to the community.”

Fennell said he wanted to make an impact on the community.

“I think there are a lot of things that Lorain has to offer, and if I can position myself to make some type of impact, that’s what I’m going to do,” Fennell said.

He said he hopes to acquire a food truck to draw more customers in from the outside, as a lot of individuals don’t know that the American Legion Post 30 is open to the public.

“We’re really just starting to get our names out there,” Fennell said. “There’s a lot more to our story, and this was a big blessing in disguise.”

Breakthrough Kitchen is open from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.
