Baskin-Robbins will hold its grand opening July 19 in Maricopa, two months later than initially expected, confirmed the owner today after reporters spotted progress at a Sonoran Creek Marketplace storefront.

The grand opening will feature $2 scoops all day, along with a DJ from noon to 4 p.m., giveaways and coupons, according to franchisee Dana Rakvica.

“With costs going up, it’s still a great deal,” Rakvica told InMaricopa today. A single scoop costs $4.49 at the closest current location at Queen Creek and Alma School Roads. “We invest a lot of money into giving away all that ice cream, but it’s an investment in the future of the store.”

Soft openings are planned for July 17 and 18, with hours from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The store was originally slated to open in May with $1 scoops, InMaricopa reported in early February. But Rakvica said equipment-related supply chain issues pushed the timeline back.

Rakvica said staff hiring is already complete. “They’re already training at our other stores,” he said. In fact, there will be triple the number of staff on the floor during the Maricopa grand opening than on a given day at the Sun Lakes shop, “just to keep the line moving.”

The midmonth timing was intentional. With summer vacation and Independence Day coinciding, “people are not in ‘normal life mode’ around July 4,” Rakvica said. Later in July, “they’re getting ready to go back to school.”

Final permits for the store are expected to be issued this week.

The new Sonoran Creek location marks the Canton, Mass.-based company’s return to the city after more than a decade. The previous shop, located along John Wayne Parkway in the Maricopa Fiesta plaza, shuttered in 2013 after eight years in business.

“We’re excited,” Rakvica said. “We want this to be a really good opening.”
