When I had my daughter, I wanted to make her birthday cakes myself. It became sort of a hobby, I make cakes for my family frequently and now I want to get into selling my cakes. This is a homemade lemon cake with vanilla buttercream. How much do you think I should charge for a cake like this? Thank you in advance. I’m still trying to come up with an efficient menu starting out :’)

Pricing depends on location. You need to factor your skill, price for quality ingredients, hourly wage, and labor. If you’re wanting to start off, I would recommend doing some smaller jobs only with lower prices. If you are just starting and the community has a large amount of competition, you may want to consider doing like 5-20% over grocery store pricing to JUST get a portfolio. Make sure you have recipes that you can easily change sizes for. Make sure you know all of your competition. If you’re just starting, you also may want to consider reaching out to local businesses and offering some treats. Places like car dealerships can honestly be a great way into the door. Get those business cards and apply them to all packaging. Also, make sure you know the local and state laws. Many places do not allow any dairy under cottage law. Get your permits!
