Today we’re going on an ultimate Egyptian street food tour in Alexandria, on the Mediterranean Coast of Egypt! This is the second largest city in Egypt, and it has a completely different feel from Cairo with a different food scene. So our mission is to eat some of the best local Egyptian food today in Alexandria!
It’s also special because Abanoub, who has been taking me around Egypt – this is his hometown, and so we are in very good hands with an Alexandrian local!
Am Zaghloul (https://maps.app.goo.gl/bot9zysZVrzbKkBPA) – You can’t resist eating fuul and falafel for breakfast in Egypt everyday, it’s too good.! And this favorite spot in Alexandria is extremely popular for their trays of Egyptian breakfast. Total price – 415 EGP ($8.20)
Awlad Abdo (https://maps.app.goo.gl/K4FUiTrtGocJTnnr9) – Next up, Abanoub took me to his favorite Egyptian sandwich stall, that specializes in these mini sandwiches that have tons of flavor – from Egyptian soguk to cheese and seafood, there are so many combinations, and very tasty. Price for everything – 180 EGP ($3.56)
Malek el Semman (https://maps.app.goo.gl/A6Wjv7ta1GsEi57S6) – This legendary restaurant is known for their grilled quails. The quails are marinated in a paste of seasoning, then grilled over hot fire. They are extremely tasty, even more than expected. Price – 745 EGP ($14.72)
El Kalaa (https://maps.app.goo.gl/sddAmGoxb9Rqte5E9) – After walking around the Mediterranean Coast in Alexandria we are continuing with this Egyptian street food tour to eat at a few spots that are extremely popular. El Kayla specializes in Egyptian style feteer, a thin flaky dough that’s wrapped up with tons of fillings – from sausage and soguk to cheese, and sweet versions, then baked until crispy. It was phenomenal. Price – 415 EGP ($8.20)
Al Kayyal Butchery (https://maps.app.goo.gl/zkSDuunzZn477WzE7) – We had hawawshi in Cairo, but in Alexandria they do things a little differently. This local hawawshi is intense with so many people and so many things going on. We got the soguk and cheese stuffed hawawshi, baked to crispy perfection. Price – 280 EGP ($5.53)
Balbaa (https://maps.app.goo.gl/M9yEhho83VBN7jt18) – One of the most legendary food institutions in Alexandria, this is one of those restaurants you have to go to to say you’ve been to Alexandria. Their chicken marinated in onions and grilled is fantastic, and their lamb chops are among the best you’ll ever have. 986
El Falah (https://maps.app.goo.gl/J8SNESB1GY87kUVBA) – When Egyptians think about Alexandria food, one of the things everyone thinks about is liver sandwich, and this place is legendary. Price – 52 EGP ($1.03) for 4 sandwiches

Aanu yes man oh this place is packed look at this place oh man what a spot slotted between the alleys and the kitchen oh and greeted by all the friendly staff you are welcome at our small village thank you very much a great place a great place you can taste oh thank you thank you nothing like being greeted with a a taste a taste test oh I think that’s one of those uh shrimp fries as they call them in Egypt a batter coated fry oh there’s falafel okay there’s fries the breakfast action in Alexandria is in full force right now and let me just quickly explain what’s going on here they’re famous for their stuffed falafels they’re famous for fool they’re famous for all the different breakfast Egyptian salads and dishes and side dishes and everything and they’re also famous for a style of serving which is on the tray a single person tray with fool with falafel with all the different salads of your choice they’ve kind of popularized that trend these are fresh trays ready to serve to customers yes yes oh oh that looks good oh nice okay oh they have a whole dining area over here nice if you’ve already watched the Cairo videos uh I’ve said this a couple of times but nothing can prepare you for the shock and the thrill of the breakfast rush in Egypt okay we call it shami bread shami bread oh shami is like Lebanese isn’t it yeah okay sham oh okay oh this is a different Yeah different from the bread of Cairo or the Egyptian bread yeah it’s more more like pa bread almost now let’s try the fool i’ve had fool every single day without fail in Egypt and it’s something I could eat every day for breakfast i’ve told you that already well the creaminess the protein the tahini mixed in this one has some uh tomatoes some peppers and in Alexander do they use what type of oil or No just vegetable oil oh just vegetable oil okay we don’t eat the flax seed oil in Alexander that like in Cairo or other areas okay but we like it blended because that way it will be easier to digest ah okay so it’s actually like blended into a blended fava bean paste in Alexandria and it’s also unique because there’s so many different variations of pool throughout different regions of Egypt okay let’s move in for their famous stuffed falafel and you got to I guess you got to break it open to find out what’s inside that’s the only one way to find out yes the melted cheese on the inside oh did you see that poof that cloud of steam that came out when you break it open okay and then the Egyptian way to do it is to grab it with bread you could put the whole thing in or you could Oh oh oh look at that the cheese squeeze okay oh it’s so creamy okay m oh yeah the cheese add like a little creaminess uh-huh it’s It’s really Yeah that’s like a new take on a falafel you got that same extra crispy exterior the crumbly fava bean infused with coriander and then you have this melted creamy salty cheese on the inside that adds this like richness to it i think I want to chase that with a pickle yeah salty crispy briny refreshing get some of the fried eggplant scoop into the fool that’s a You can even use your other piece of bread to kind of leverage it scoop it on taste that with the green chili the fried green chili i love that combination the creaminess of the eggplant the creaminess of the fool and then the green chili chaser okay and we have two different types of cheese egyptian cheese this one is called the old cheese and the the new cheese cottage cheese oh and the cottage cheese okay we have had some old cheese so far in Egypt call it arish okay this is like a kind of like a cheese salad though made with tomatoes and it’s kind of creamy and saucy [Music] not too strong but a good like fermentation definitely and then it’s made into like a sauce so that it’s easy to dip with the acidity the juiciness of the tomatoes is it common all over Egypt or Yeah all over Egypt but it uh very famous in It’s very famous for being too salty here it’s like not too salty okay yeah good yeah not too salty it’s better yeah uh-huh yeah okay now let’s try the cottage cheese version yeah you can almost taste the probiotics no I’m just joking but the onions the tomato m what I like about this one is you can really taste the dill in it herbaceious creamy that kind of like yogurty sourness to that cheese as well all right Abanoo what do we have here this is fried cheese okay and eat it together with bread oh nice yeah this is like processed cheese yeah kind of like a mozzarella stick not quite as stretchy as I was expecting but more of like that cheese sauciness almost yeah it’s not like one piece of cheese it’s like mixed okay this is another outstanding breakfast in Egypt the variety and just a cool really cool really friendly place the staff are so friendly i love the atmosphere here it’s really in the back alleys of Alexandria and then they have some nice dining areas where you can kind of escape the busyiness of Alexandria for a peaceful breakfast okay okay mr salah mr salah salah mr salah okay this a good one he is a good man this a great man in this uh country habibi habibi good habibi shakran shakran thanks man we’re off to an incredible start to this Alexandria food tour uh but I hope you’re already enjoying this video please remember to give it a thumbs up uh and also leave a comment below let me [Music] all right Abanoo where are we at next we’re at Aland Abdu is very famous for sandwiches many all kind of sandwiches actually anytime you see a big crowd of people when you’re in Egypt it’s a place you want to be they have all the bastma which is hanging in the front so that’s how you know what they are serving and then they’re popular you see people just getting a whole tray of sandwiches they’re little sandwiches the bread is not thick not too big so you can eat a lot of sandwiches and they just absolutely load them up with the toppings so we ordered the sandwich just within that area all the toppings or ingredients for the sandwiches are ready to go and they just pile it into these little loaves of bread very light bread almost a dozen different varieties of sandwiches we’ll just do kind of a rapid fire taste them all first one I think is squid oh so that’s like fried squid oh yeah fried breaded squid you really taste the green peppers in here and that bread yeah it’s really light but it has this nice chewiness to it let’s try the next one is a fried shrimp with fried green peppers as well onions in there okay yeah that’s good too really taste the flavor of the shrimp in there and that fried breading now I understand how like you saw one person would eat like five or 10 sandwiches they go down really easy and the bread is not that filling okay next up is for the egg and bastard so the bastard that’s the the like sausagey looking loaf all that one is very tasty that’s a like perfect little breakfast roll sandwich all of your essentials wrapped in handheld bread okay this is a really interesting one i think it’s imitation crab with shrimps and squids oh okay oh it’s actually pretty good almost like a curry with that hot doggy imitation crab i’m usually not a huge fan of imitation crab but it’s actually quite tasty those sandwiches were just warm-up sandwiches but these are their main most famous sandwiches we got to try them all starting with this one right here filled with bastard and sug oh yeah the sug tomato sauce tomato sauce you see the like anisa seed in there this is their most well-known sandwich oh wow okay yeah you will not doubt that this is their most popular most famous sandwich that combination is incredible the tomatoes the like you taste chili oil in there just spewing from the bread the flavor of that anis seed or fennel fennel I think that’s what it is the crumbliness of the suga sausage kind of like chili flavored basta oh it’s good next up for the cold beef oh this one is just like looks like almost like just a roast beef sandwich oh yeah oh it’s really tender it’s beefy kind of tastes like the shin the shin of the beef meat okay next up for the beef with onions and oh that looks like fresh beef just chopped up with the fat onions in [Music] there that is very tasty indeed the black pepper in there the sweetness of the onions the fatty melting beef it’s like a beef stew almost oh yeah okay and next one is cheese with beef with peppers with [Music] tomatoes okay that’s definitely that old Egyptian cheese that aroma mhm with the beef with the peppers yeah these sandwiches are addictive okay i can definitely see why uh someone would go in there and order five 10 sandwiches for themselves and down them all they’re addictive they’re light they’re tasty this one has a a very funny name uh which the familyfriendly name is called Sakalans and they take sandwiches so seriously here that this one is a dessert sandwich everything is in sandwich like everything you can imagine put it into bread sandwich it’s dessert once you finish all your sandwiches then you get dessert sandwich m it’s actually delicious with cream sweetness of molasses the creaminess of that tahini and the cream and the halawa yeah it’s actually really good conveniently located just around the corner from the sandwich restaurant is the next place that we’re going to they’re doing a bit of construction outside looks like they’re renovating the front of the restaurant but it’s a heritage it’s an iconic restaurant uh that’s famous for one unique dish that we’re going to try the grill master yes what an awesome man and I love he has the feather fan on the grill but he’s just getting ready to cook what they’re most famous for which is quails of God come on oh the flip okay I think our ours is ready coils are ready man that skin is charred it’s sizzling those coils smell so good so Abanoo you were telling me this place is legendary also right yeah it’s very famous here in Alexandria it’s called King of Queens the coils nice i used to open just just three months a year okay when it was quiling the season but now it’s open all year all year round okay i’m going to pick this little coil up and you can see how juicy it is it’s moist and oily and juicy with that spice blend just charred upon it and you can break off Oh the drumstick break off the drumstick you see how oily and moist that meat is [Music] oh wow oh that’s phenomenal it is so moist and oily and really like the meat is silky smooth yeah it’s really good mhm that’s like a dark meat chicken but just way more intense and the flavor more condensed and oily wow that’s stunning that’s incredible yeah you can really taste the herbs without like you can also taste the qu itself yeah and I think I think it’s so juicy on the inside that they may even brine them like soak them in a marinade before they get that spice rub to get them that juiciness that you can taste like saltiness all the way to the bone man I love the way they grill it like grilling in a lot of Egypt but with an extremely hot fire to scorch the outside but keeping the inside juicy if you look around here you’ll just notice coils coils are everywhere painted on the walls and this place is so famous a lot of famous people Egyptians have been here have tried their coils and yeah I like that spice blend that they marinate the coils in which Aban was telling me is full of zatar these are famous links of sausages this is the combination you have to get right here suguk oh hanging sausages suguk and coil and this should be eaten with bread i think bread on tahini let’s grab some bread wrap the whole sug and you have to dip it in the tahini something so tasty like just the saltiness the crumbliness the meatiness m and it has very unique taste like Yeah this is not the usual suggypt well the good thing about sugu is everyone tastes different like everyone has their own combination and blend their own blend of meat and spices wow those are have to try the quails and the sug what a combination and also the drumstick and the thigh combination is incredible but wait till you see on this one the juiciness of the breast area and look how moist and oily that is too oh man i think one of the great things about a quail is usually the breast on any bird like a chicken that’s the driest part of the bird but on quail it’s almost like the entire thing is dark meat the entire thing is juicy and moist and like that dark meat intensity of flavor and condensed flavor but yeah this is an absolute must eat when you’re in Alexandria it’s so tasty add in another sug and for this one I’m going to dip into the baba ganug which is the Egyptian eggplant spread extremely tasty next up we’re going to eat something that’s really important and it is Egyptian but it’s from Alexandria but before we eat that I think it’s important to tell you a little bit about the history and the significance of Alexandria because this city is fascinating located in northern Egypt along the Mediterranean Sea the area of Alexandria was originally an ancient Egyptian settlement that was later founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC the city has definitely had its ups and downs from being an ancient capital of knowledge and learning to a ghost town and today a thriving Egyptian city the second biggest in Egypt and the biggest city on the Mediterranean Sea you will love the energy here the narrow lanes teameming with yellow cabs the vibrant markets the contrast of ancient and new and when it comes to the food the excitement is never ending next up on this Egyptian food tour in Alexandria we’re going to eat something that you absolutely have to eat when you come to Alexandria it’s called fatir oh getting our first look at the fatir oh baking in the oven shakran oh look he’s getting started on a a fresh one right now so it starts oh man he helicopters that dough oh spreading it out until it’s paper thin translucent see-through okay and then he folds it over going to make the shape now stretches it out again and now you get your choice of toppings this one looks like meat sausage sausage oh sausage straight sausage goes on okay oh more meat goes on looks like a minced meat mixture wow tomatoes go on okay basterma goes on too oh oh the toppings keep on coming now a whole handful a double handful of cheese that’s so much cheese oh and it gets folded over that’s thick so many ingredients in the center packed in okay so now you have the layers of the dough and now he kind of pleats that over into a package oh man that is just fully stuffed fully loaded Alexandria style oh fresh one ready okay and that goes directly into the oven he slides it into the box and then immediately slices it the cheese is oozing and you can see how crispy it is and it’s so crispy on those top layers okay very good okay now he’s slicing up a fresh one you can see all those ingredients cheese just squeezing out oh served in a pizza box we got the potato hot and fresh huge thank you to all the all the chefs here really friendly really nice and the in the back here also he’s the master yes okay shakran shakran friendly place so they don’t have any seating here but I’ve always wanted to eat off the back of a yellow Alexandria cab these classic cars classic cabs oh and open it up and it’s just a poof of steam oh man it is huge it weighs a ton it’s fully loaded you can see how crispy it is from being baked with the And he keeps on basting it with butter so it gets crispy and crispy the layers are so crispy oh yeah there’s got to be a strategy here it’s hot oh that feels good in the finger oh that’s hot i’ll try i think I got it oh oh it’s so hot okay oh oh wow okay if you love melted cheese holy steam coming out of my mouth that is as good as it gets it’s just a waterfall of cheese just melting dropping down from your tongue then you get a get a piece of that basherma the juiciness of the tomatoes with that thin paper thin dough that’s so crispy and buttery and the the sug with that that sausage that he was adding in is a sug but not in sausage formation in minced meat formation okay I actually want to take one of those one of those side pieces i think I might be a fan of the side pieces because it has even more crispy dough whereas the center is just straight up straight up melted cheese okay now it’s manageable not too hot oh oh man it’s hot i’m breathing fire with melted cheese the steam is coming out that’s so good the juicy tomatoes that has to be the most cheese and meat to dough ratio you’ll ever have okay next up we got to try the soup sweet one thank you and now this one is the sweet one so powdered sugar goes over the entire sheet of dough when it’s ready so it’s crispy crispy there’s only powdered sugar and butter inside oh and then immediately paints some butter on top of it melted butter oh this one is crispy and thin and now here comes the special touch oh the cream oh and this is the cream oh oh it’s sticky okay anie puts cream like looks like a clotted cream oh cream oh man some more powdered sugar goes on keeps growing in toppings and more butter now the slice and more sugar layer upon layer of powdered sugar every single bite has a blob of the cream and you got to fold it so that cream is on the inside with the crispy dough dessert wow okay that is sweet but that is good it’s juicy it’s milky it’s like crispy dough that’s been like absorbed with butter and with sugar and with cream and with milk and yet it still remains crispy that is good but it’s extremely rich and very sweet but you definitely got to try them both both the savory version and the sweet version of a Wow that was good okay let’s move on to the next spot and next up we’re also eating something that’s extremely famous in Alexandria oh man this is the next spot oh there’s just a crowd of people huddled outside oh it’s packed oh man look at how fast that dough is ready he makes it into the perfect ball shape all even sizes there’s all the balls of dough ready to go then it moves over to this station where he’s flattening them out all the balls of dough and then it moves over to the next station where he tops it with the meat filling a variety of meat filling I think oh and this one is like a minced meat and then it gets topped okay there’s so minced meat oh and basta I think so we’re here to eat Alexandrian style hawashi and this place it is a packed house it is incredible el thank you thank you okay eli Mark yes yes thank you thank you oh this is amazing and this is only the first station outside on the sidewalk where they’re rolling out the dough and making the hawashi then they go inside where they’re cooking and we’re going to see the next step I think if we can get into the kitchen we’ll see if we can even make it in there it is so packed okay now it’s on the hot griddle oh wow okay cheese goes on top okay and this Wow whoa flaming hot whoa whoa that oven okay wow oh man the oven is blazing it’s intense oh the cheese on top is okay okay wow oh that cheese on top cheese on top this has to be one of the most intense baking rooms oven rooms you’ll ever see the the pace woo that’s hot hot coming from the oven props to the baker man he’s getting a workout just nonstop it’s like working in a sauna [Music] wow [Music] and it’s so different from any other hashi I’ve seen and these are the finished hashes here so then they get sliced up oh with the meat on the inside oh it’s so juicy the cheese yes the cheese pull and then into boxes hawashi boxes [Music] wow wow extreme this place is extreme this is about as highpaced octane turbo of a kitchen that you’ll see anywhere in the world oh man on another level okay wow the butcher is in the back thank you oh we’re also getting some special chops here cuz it’s a whole butchery oh and the owner himself making us something special juicy onions go on marinated with onions oh oh a squeezed tomato on top salt [Music] okay and that goes directly onto the fire shakran open it up oh they have to put a little plastic on it oh it’s steaming and this is the Alexandrian hawashi which is totally different from the Cairo hawi yeah it almost looks like nothing like it it’s topped with cheese there’s meat on the inside let’s just grab one piece grab a piece i think we got two different Yeah we got two different ones one is with the minced meat one is with the sug Oh oh the cheese look on the inside it’s like a cheese crust on the top and look how moist that mince meat is oh wow oh that is That’s unbelievable you will not believe how juicy the meat is on the inside how cheesy the stretchiness of the cheese and the dough on both sides surrounding it it’s like a It’s like a soup dumpling like baked bread with cheese all over it wow that’s good that is hashi on the next level and it’s so hot and so steaming this is something special truly phenomenal the flavor of the green chilies that minced meat is just oily to perfection they have the perfect ratio that is good let’s move on to the next tawashi oh and this one is fresh out of the oven just boiling hot this one is with a sug okay ready for the the first I think that first bite right in the center while it’s flaming hot is one of the most satisfying bites you can have if you lift up this flap the cheese oh the cheese crust oh man it’s like soupy in your mouth from the cheese and the meat oil and the dough which is saturated with the oils and the juices this one you taste more of an herbaceious aroma uh maybe with some thyme or some oregano in that meat with cheese meat cheese green peppers dough baked in a sauna of an oven this is hard to beat that’s why there’s just a a mass of people standing outside waiting to eat the hawashi and this is the owner he insisted that we have some some freshly sliced beef steaks oh oh man that is very tasty it’s tender he marinated it in onions and squeezed on the juice of a tomato then right under that hot fire that’s a great steak that is so tasty there’s a reason why there’s such a huge crowd here you will not go wrong next up tonight we’re going to a restaurant that is an absolute institution it’s a restaurant that you have to eat at when you’re in Alexandria it’s one of the the main iconic legendary restaurants welcome to Balba and again there is no bigger name no more famous name in the restaurant industry in Alexandria than Balba it is a true family restaurant institution known for their grills their Egyptian grilled meat and also fish they’re known for chicken they’re known for lamb chops and this restaurant is huge okay so we’re ordering some of the lamb chops hello some of the best lamb chops in all of Egypt okay okay yes that’s what we came for the lamb chops okay so the lamb chops oh and the lamb chops just go directly into the the trough of tomatoes onions peppers into the grill wow dripping with juice with tomato juice and that goes directly onto the grill look at the scale of this grill it’s a full 180°ree grill it’s a half moon it’s huge oh that chicken legendary oh oh yeah oh that’s the famous the legendary Balba chicken which we did order just sizzling with onions okay okay oh the heart nice the man oh oh look he made a heart for delivery a heart for delivery very very nice yeah this guy is the master plater right here very nice and he’s so happy and jolly yes coming okay thank you coming coming [Laughter] kisses to everyone thank you thank you thank you very much yeah people here are friendly um and they gave us like the royal plating here we go these are known to be some of the best lamb chops in Egypt oh yeah in all Egypt yeah in all of Egypt okay okay i’ll take that one oh man it is moist it’s out of control moist and juicy oh oh man oh yeah wow that is a crazy good lamb chop it’s fresh it’s moist it’s juicy it’s coated in tomato juice and onions that’s a phenomenal lamb chop oh then you get that little section with the fat on it it’s so good best sport this is the best sport mhm that’s insanely good but let’s move over to the chicken and this chicken I love how it’s grilled with onions and peppers just embedded into it i’ll just go right into the center there and kind of scoop out a scoop out a bite not even sure if it’s bone it has little bones the bone side which side is the bone no you never know you never know which side is up and which side is down on this chicken you’re disoriented cuz of all those toppings oh but it’s so juicy on the inside look at [Music] that wow that’s phenomenal that is juicy oily infused with onions very good everything you want in a chicken oh very good very good everything you want in a chicken chicken very good very good okay for my next bite I’ll dip it into the garlic yeah oh with that garlic oh that chicken is so good if anyone visiting Alexandria from other parts of Egypt is this a must visit oh yeah they come here especially for this place people come here to eat at Baba yeah yeah from like from long time ago okay yeah the lamb chops are impossible to beat here that’s the meat of choice dip it into the tahini the lamb chops cannot be beaten that’s absolute must and the chicken and for dessert this is mahala malaba mahala mahala very important okay very very good thank you really good m really smooth and creamy and cold and refreshing okay all of the top managers running a restaurant of this size very impressive yes welcome chran have fun chukran next up on this Egyptian food tour tonight we’re going to one of the most popular places in all of Alexandria you can smell the liver in the air and just look at this place it is just another growling restaurant in Egypt kind of street food kind of restaurant they serve it all from a couple of shopouses and then there’s just crowds of people standing around and then there’s just tables in the rooms uh the smell of liver just filling the air this place is called Alala I believe many sandwiches wow that is a bouquet of sandwiches how many 15 20 oh 13 wow 30 sandwiches so the legendary Alexandria liver sandwiches this place is It’s the type of place you can find people from all walks of life come here to enjoy the sandwiches they’re little sandwiches so people get like a mountain of sandwiches not even kidding literally a mountain okay so the strategy is So actually these are little mini lemons so you squeeze on then you take a bite of the sandwich and chase with the green pepper oh and it’s that really light oh yeah it’s really light bread m oh and taste with the green chili okay that is very tasty it’s simple oh and with the crunch of the green chili it’s salty it’s a little bit spicy you’ve got that acid from the lemon the liver kind of just like melts in your mouth with the chewy fluffy bread they go down really easily and I can see how they are very addictive the liver has to be sliced very thin to make it Alexandrian style even though they’re slices of liver because it’s tender like that it’s almost like a a liver spread almost yeah liver butter within the within your bread they’re like three bite sandwiches definitely green chili oh yeah oh that green chili is amazing it’s a little bit spicy well bites okay that last bite is a little bit big i can see how those sandwiches are extremely addictive and like just about everything else we’ve eaten today that is the main attraction that is just attracting a huge crowd of locals that come here to eat every day and I’ll have all the information in the description box below everywhere we at i want to say a huge thank you to my friend Abonoo for taking me around Alexandria this is his hometown and if you haven’t already watched the rest of the videos in this Egyptian series we’re traveling I'm Egyptian living in the US, and I missed the last restaurant that served liver. That sandwich is so tasty — some people even eat it with lemon and chili-flavored potato chips make it double tasty 🤤
Cottage cheese it's called farmers cheese. They do that in Albania too, and all over the other countries around us.
