My favorite salsa, Frontera Salsa Verde, is dead. I bought this salsa exclusively at the store and would sometimes buy in bulk because it could be hard to find. Lately I noticed the quality was off, the smokyness wore off the flavor, the quality felt bad, and the flavor profile was drastically different. All I could taste was salt water. I opened my last jar yesterday and realized I'm done with this brand. 🫗

I included 3 pictures of other salsas I bought to try instead that all seem decent enough but each with its own kinds of flavor profiles. My favorite of the three I tried so far was XOCHITL.

Why not make your own? I just posted a green salsa you’ll love

I had so much hope for Tia Lupita and everything I’ve tried is so bad.

Tia lupita is my fav store condiment. I know that’s a no go for most here but I do like their stuff 🙁

Fun fact, Rick Bayless bullshit FRONTIER salsa made me so angry that I went and learned on my own

  5. I like Herdez green salsa, a little bit salty and doesn’t have the fresh tang of homemade but very reliable.

I would email Rick bayless I think he has control over the brand and is a super dude

I enjoy the Xochitl one. It’s not like scratch made or anything. I wouldn’t choose it first for anything where it’s the star of the show, but it’s nice as a lesser component. I actually really like it on my chicken enchiladas.

I’m pretty positive on most things Chicago, but I was never impressed by Frontera.

I’ve been eating XOCHITL for about a week on fried chicken tacos. I just got into this sub and haven’t tried making my own yet.

Yellow bird hot sauce is pretty good if you want to switch it up

You can do way better. Trust yourself. 10-12 small ro medium Tomatillos, 1/2 a small onion, a roma tomato, a jalapeño or Serrano (or two), 4 or 5 cloves garlic, 8 or so chilis arbol, salt and cumin. Roast or boil the veggies (not the onion if boiling). Blend everything super well. Let cool. Dice the other half of the onion, chop some cilantro and add in. Stir…don’t blend. That’s it. You’ll be glad you did. Adjust ingredients to your taste. You’ll never go back to jar. You got this!

I have also noticed the Frontera salsa is inconsistent. My favorite one hasn’t been so bad I’ve stopped buying it, but the quality definitely varies between batches.

Renfro’s green salsa is the best I’ve had

Aldi has a verde salsa. Not the avocado one, it’s legitimately the best store bought salsa I’ve had.

    Easy to make your own.

Get two lbs of tomatillos. Get a melon baller and core out the stem end.

    Couple of Serranos.

Boil the tomatillos in a wide pan where the water doesn’t completely cover the tomatillos, cored side up with the serranos until the skin turns a bit grey (they are cooked through).

Drain the water. Put the tomatillos and peppers into a blender with a tsp of salt, juice of a lime, clove of fresh garlic, and half a bunch of cilantro. Blend for 60 seconds, adjust salt to your taste. Absolute perfection.
