Prior I tried Crowned Prince since I saw that brand mentioned as a starter brand, but I did not like the smoky , bland flavor at all. Forced myself to finish the can for health benefits, but did not make me want eat sardines again willingly.
Decided to give it another try. I've seen Nuri mentioned quite a bit, saw the YouTube videos, and finally just bit the bullet after a few months and bought the $26 sampler of 4 different flavors on Amazon. First one I went for is the Spiced Olive oil and ate it all. The clove, pepper, spices, oil, every last drop.
Reminded me more of fresh cooked Portuguese sardines I had a long time ago. Well worth the price, but now I'm kind of sad that I'll want more and I can't go back to the cheaper cans that are cheaper, but I dread to eat.

Welcome to the club! I’m glad u liked em
Disregard my bad grammar above… can’t edit. Any other brands recommended that are similar?
Nuri is great, it’s basically all i buy lol I have a subscription for that 4 pack
Nuri 8-packs of a single flavor are often ~$40 on subscription from Amazon. That gets you most of the way down to the next price tier. Bela are almost as good and used to be in the $3-3.50 range, but have crept up towards Nuri in price. Flower Moroccan Spice can be really inexpensive if you buy them 50 at a time from Amazon or can find them at your local Asian grocer (which I can’t).
Try other portuguese brands, try to find cheaper ones… like Manná, Ramirez, Bom Petisco, etc
I bought a can of these hoping they’d be my intro to tinned fish heaven, but I’m still too nervous to try them.
Thanks for adding some fuel to the fish fire! Do you have any tips or suggestions for preparing these bad boys for a ‘dine newb?
Cheaper brands are often meant for cooking or things like sandwiches. There’s also no need to eat them straight out of the can like a lot of videos show them. Eating them that way is going to accentuate any characteristic someone potentially might not like. Most people worldwide who eat them use them as an ingredient with a lot of other things in their meals.
And don’t feel like you need to eat them for health benefits. Sardines are a good option but not some kind of superfood like they’re hyped and people have been easily creating healthy diets without them all over the world forever.
It’s totally fine to save those Nuris for an occasional treat and either cook with cheaper brands or skip them altogether.
Those ones are spiced tomato sauce not spiced olive oil.
Did you try both oil and tomato?
