I’m not sure when I took over making my own birthday cake, more than 30 years ago anyway. OPs looks happy, so im assuming that as with me this is something they enjoy. I don’t think ive ever made something this impressive, but it’s a nice excuse to try new recipes.

It’s a chocolate cake using Confetti and Bliss’s recipe for spiderweb Halloween cupcakes (best chocolates cake recipe I’ve found), King Arthur’s vanilla American buttercream recipe, and a simple raspberry compote for rhe filling between the layers. Very delicious!
