So I bought this red onion yesterday, left it outside and today I cut it in have and within 3 hours it sprouted this much. Is this normal? I did noticed that while I was cutting it within 10 min it already had about 2 cm sticking out but then I checked again 3 hours later and it was like this.

Depending where you were, a lot of people had a warmer day yesterday, so in the sun, little onion said “oh boy!!! Now’s my chance!!”
I think as the moisture evaporated the onion shrunk a bit and squeezed the inner layers out a bit going upward. Are you in an arid location?
If you can push them back down then it didn’t sprout.
