I’ve officially taken over the kitchen duties because my wife reached a breaking point with our culinary critics…aka our picky children. Tonight was my debut: Homemade Pot Pie.

I spent a long time on it…I was so proud!

Then, dinner happened. My picky kids threw their pieces out. While my wife ate it, she performed a full-scale forensic autopsy on her slice and picked out all the peas. By the time the wife and kids were done, my beautiful creation looked like a crime scene.

I’m not looking for recipes, I’m looking for a shoulder to cry on. Just needed to vent before I go back to making nuggets for the rest of my life!

  1. It looks so golden and flaky, too. Tragedy! I really love peas, so I’d be bummed. Your work was great even if it wasn’t well-received.

  2. Long_Shake9969

It looks so delicious! Do you have a picture of a cross section?

Either way, sorry about your picky family. Mine is the same way and it always stings a bit when something I cook doesn’t land with them.

If it makes you feel better it’s happened to me too 😔 it’s a shame chicken pot pie lovers unite!

It may be too late for you, but ALWAYS limit your childrens choices at meals.
That said, since my wife doesn’t like peas, I use frozen country mixed veg when making chux pot pie. No peas. Made one tonite!

Any time I cook something “new” it’s a 50/50 chance if my picky family will like it or not. I’ve started making things I KNOW I’ll like that way at least I have leftovers to eat. 🙂

Kids are the worst! I made salmon for dinner tonight and it’s always the same, I have to take the flank and divide it into thirds: my daughter prefers pesto butter with dill, my son prefers a dry maple rub, and I like lemon and Old Bay. It took me three years to get it the way the whole family will eat!

    I love pot pies!

My dad would make them with leftover turkey or chicken. Everyone likes peas & carrots so we didn’t have this issue in my family.

At first I was like ha! Venting! Venting both like rant and the vents in the pie crust!

Then I read your description and I’m sad for you 💔 I would love that pie

We had a similar experience! My son made a lovely chicken pot pie – all chicken breast meat and homemade pie dough – for his birthday party. It was delicious and no one ate it. I told him next year, it’s chicken nuggets and ketchup for his friends because that’s what they want. He is 16. What happened to this generation? I’m 58 and homemade chicken pot pie is the ultimate comfort food.

That pie is gorgeous. I bet it was delicious.

That pot pie looks perfect! lol “performed a full-scale forensic autopsy.”😂😂😂😂
I think if it looks like it tastes- you are doing well (sans peas 😉). Try new recipes for you two, and start slow with the kiddos. Make homemade chicken tenders instead of the frozen nuggets. Have them help make pizza or tacos. The more they’re engaged in prep- the more likely they are to eat it! If your wife is reading this: lol -from one wife to another- I get you! At least he made something that looks quite nice…except for those peas! lol this was a great post! 😀

Well that crust looks outstanding! I’m the chef at our home of picky eaters too. I feel your pain!!

the way you pinched that pie crust is so perfect. how many pies have you made over time? cpp is one of my absolute favorite comfort foods. peas are a great addition for a taste of green among all the creaminess.

Looks great and good job on the crimping. Feeding kids is a thankless job and your wife is just tired. Keep baking if it brings you joy.

I don’t like peas much myself, but I love chicken pot pie and will happily eat it with peas in it!

  16. LiveWhatULove

My kids LOVE chicken pot pie! That is crazy, it’s so great.

  17. Then-Chocolate-5191

I deeply dislike peas, but can eat them when mixed in to something like a pot pie. However, if I’m cooking, I omit them.

My kids eat what I make. Husband too. I’m not a restaurant. If they don’t eat dinner, they can wait until breakfast. No chips, cookies or ice cream. I make dinner & you eat dinner.

Picky doesn’t work for me. There are times they are at their place at the table for a long time after the rest of us eat because they refuse. I’m OK with that too.
Doesn’t change the fact that no snacks are allowed if you don’t eat your food.

Hubby is on board & that’s the rules at our house. Our son has suddenly learned to eat vegetables & chicken, ravioli & red sauce.
Sure beats being hungry I guess. The other kids are now slowly coming around.

All of that to say, don’t drive yourself crazy looking for different recipes. Just make regular food, set the table & serve it. If they’re hungry enough, they will eat it. If not, that’s life.

Your pot pie looks delicious to me. Great job.

Ah by venting I thought you meant releasing steam from the pie not your ears. Sorry bro, I just got done feeding a toddler. I understand your frustration. She sent back her tater tots yesterday.

  20. Now you know how your wife feels 🤣 cooking something because you know your kids will like it and then they basically throw it in your face (or the garbage). It looks great! I wish my husband cooked….

  21. clevercalamity

Honestly, I’m just impressed that you busted this out on a week night. I love pot pie but it’s strictly a weekend dish for us.

Also, I know you said you don’t want recipes, but when we do pot pie we sometimes do it deconstructed and have the filling like a soup and then for the “crust” we add a biscuits or piece of puff pastry on top. Saves time on the crust and makes it easier to pick out the peas. 😉

  22. mythtaken

I hear ya! Chicken pot pie is so much work! Delicious, but labor intensive.

I’m sorry the others didn’t behave very well, but hey, you’ve got leftovers to enjoy that they won’t want. That’s a win in my book, but then again, I used to get annoyed when my dad would eat ALL the leftovers late at night. (An entire giant pan of mexican rice? All by himself. Said he couldn’t resist. Wasn’t his only latenight foray in to the fridge, ice cream, beware.).

  23. StungTwice

Why did you add peas if no one else likes them?

  24. w8ing2dr0wn

I dont have picky eaters so I can’t really relate but I can tell you that I just started having my kids help me cook every meal together and I wouldnt trade that time together for anything, idk how old your kids are but maybe that could help. Step 1 of every recipe at our house is pick the perfect music.

  25. milleribsen

Love, you can do the absolute best thing in the world but if it doesn’t play to your audience you’ll end up in this situation. I would devour that pie, but your audience wasn’t necessarily interested. Listen to the people around you and find ways to fit what you want to do into the likes of your audience.

You learned something today, just make sure you learned the right thing. And I wish you the best in future endeavors!

  26. That pie looks so freakin perfect and delicious that from the title of your post I thought it was going to be about a problem cutting the little vents in the crust.

  27. If this tasted half as good as it looks, I’d absolutely devour it. Beautiful job, OP.
