The wine sector of Messinia recently took center stage in Attica as 13 Greek producers presented their wines and the region’s evolving vineyard landscape to hospitality and wine professionals during the “Messinia Terroirs Wines” event.

Launched by the Captain Vassilis and Carmen Constantakopoulos Foundation, the initiative aims to highlight modern wine production in Messinia, including new vineyard plantings featuring both Greek and international grape varieties.

Making its debut in Attica, the event was organized in collaboration with the WSPC Wine & Spirits Professional Center and brought together Messinian wineries with Greek hospitality professionals, distributors, as well as WSPC alumni and students.

Beyond the tastings, the event highlighted Messinia’s position as an emerging wine region combining long-standing viticultural heritage with a contemporary production approach.

Producers presented wines reflecting the diversity of local terroirs and microclimates, alongside labels based on both indigenous Greek grape varieties and international cultivars increasingly grown in the region.

The professional program also included two specialized masterclasses. WSPC Sommelier Academy Principal Nikos Loukakis examined how Messinian wines can be incorporated into restaurant and hotel wine lists, while WSPC tutor Tina Papasinou, MSc, DipWSET, led a tasting dedicated to the historic Fileri grape variety and its modern expressions.

The Captain Vassilis and Carmen Constantakopoulos Foundation, established in 2011, supports initiatives focused on research, education and the strengthening of local institutions with the aim of promoting sustainable development in Messinia.
