Florence, the heart of Italian wine culture, is set to host Greek Wine Day 2025 on November 1, in what will be the largest exhibition of Greek wines ever held in Italy. The date coincides with World Xinomavro Day, celebrating Greece’s signature grape variety and highlighting the country’s expanding international presence in the wine world.

The event will feature 49 wineries from across Greece, with 29 attending in person, offering visitors the chance to taste over 200 wines from both emerging and established producers across the nation’s most celebrated regions.

Organized under the auspices of the Honorary Consulate of Greece in Florence and the Municipality of Thira, the day is co-hosted by the FISAR Firenze sommelier school. Notable guests include Italy’s first Master of Wine, Gabriele Gorelli, and Michelin-starred Greek chef Stelios Sakalis, among other top wine professionals.

Haris Papandreou, founder of the project, emphasized the initiative’s grassroots nature. “We have not received any government support. What keeps the initiative alive is the passion of the people who believe in Greek wine,” he said, noting that Greek Wine Day has become “an institution” that opens doors to Italian import partnerships, Michelin restaurant listings, and sommelier education programs in Florence.”

A key highlight of this year’s event is the first joint presentation of Santorini Vinsanto and Vin Santo Chianti Classico DOC, connecting two historic wines with deep cultural and religious significance. “Florence is where Santorini wine was first recorded in 1439 – and where Greek Wine Day began five years ago,” Papandreou remarked.

The 2025 edition of Greek Wine Day aims to reinforce the international visibility of Greek wine and celebrate the country’s growing impact on the global wine stage.
