Paired with vanilla ermine frosting, which might be the best icing out there: super fluffy, not too sweet, and loved by both icing people and “not icing people.”

I just looked up the recipe — it’s the Hershey’s Black Magic Cake except Valrhona instead of Hershey cocoa.
It’s just a fluke that I noticed, I was looking at chocolate cake recipes on a post about ‘not too sweet’ cakes and comparing them to my standby — Nana’s Devils Food Cake.
And yes, I live the Devils Food Cake with Ermine also. It’s my favorite frosting.

And ermine frosting is the best non chocolate there is!! So much better than buttercream to my mind.

I looked up the recipe for the cake, it sounds delicious, but the instructions I found basically said to use a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, and what if all you have is a handheld mixer? Because chocolate cake is my person’s favorite cake, and her birthday is coming up in June and I want to be prepared.
