I have been storing my sourdough in our glass cake display case recently and I quite like it. I’m curious if anyone else has done this?

It lets me see how much I have left at a glance, keeps the bread softer as if it was in a plastic bag, and looks pretty 🙂

It doesn’t fit a new loaf but I usually leave it out anyways until I’ve had a few slices (first day or two) and then it fits easily enough!

I also use the bottom as my cutting board because it’s wood but that’s just a me thing. I know it cuts up the bottom and not everyone will like that.

Thoughts?

I would end up eating the whole loaf in a day if I did that… that’s on having no self control 😅

OMG, this is genius!!!! I bought a bunch of nice bread bags for when I want to gift a loaf or take it to an event but feel like it’s wasteful using them for my personal loaves.

Yes, I have a dome. I think it’s better, sometimes the plastic bag has moisture (?) … we have liked it since we made the change. But both worked for us. Occasionally, I have 2 types of sourdough on the counter a plain- and an inclusion, one will invariably end up in a bag since the dome is taken.

    I do it. 1. It’s pretty 2. It’s a vintage one from my MawMaw.

Once its cooled I just throw a tea towel over it because I want to maintain the original crunch of the crust as long as possible. After about 24 hours it goes in something like this.

This is the fancy version of my “just put a bowl over it” method

I bought some of those beeswax bags and they weren’t really well

This is what i like to do. I cut my loaf in half, then place the bread cut side down under the dome.

I eat mine in a couple of days if it’s not in freezer. 😭

I have one but I only use it for serving sourdough at gatherings.

Oh yeah but I’m not allowed (by the Kitchen Authority, which is also me) to use a glass dome because I’ve broken the dome twice and the Kitchen Maintenance Team (often me also) is sick of cleaning up glass shards. So I got a plastic dome from LIDL. Not as functional, but then, no chance of shards.

I think this would be nice. I’d love to have something like this. I keep my loaf in the enameled Dutch oven on the counter, which is basically the same, but the visibility of this and especially the integrated cutting board is great. I’ve had my eye out for something like this but never thought of the wooden base that way. Thanks!

I put mine in a ziplock. Well that is if it makes it longer than an afternoon in my house lol

Smart, use what you’ve got. I use my Dutch oven as a breadbox when I’m done baking.

This is how I do it. I bought a cheap one on amazon, going to keep my eye out for a glass one on market place or thrift store.

  16. I’m currently storing today’s loaf in the pyrex “dutch oven” I cooked it in! It was too small to need to freeze it.

Great idea! I forgot I had one of those, gonna use it from now on 😉

I typically wrap mine in butcher paper. Then store in a bread box. It seems to give the bread some longevity

I did this before I got my bread box!

This is the only way I’ve done it, I didn’t know there was another way. I’m new!

  21. palmeegirl

I also do this! It’s nice too because you’re creating waste for every loaf you make (and it’s pretty)

This is what we do and it works great 🙂

That looks very nice, but encroaches on precious counter space. Linen bag user ‘till the end!

I store my round loaves in my cake stand. So far I’ve not had a conflict where I needed to store a cake and a loaf of bread at the same time.

I use a marble-based cake display stand. It’s pretty and my bread keeps really well. I’ve had 0 out of 20+ loaves go dry and 1 out of 20+ loaves go mouldy after 4-5 days. It is pretty warm and humid here though.
