I saw in the other post how surprised people were to know that grocery store cakes can be pretty. 😂 In my experience (decorated for 3 different companies), there are some stores that have amazing decorators on staff. These will usually be your flagship stores, although I worked for a really shitty store (it was closest to my house) and had people drive from all over the area to order cakes from there.
A lot of really talented decorators actually prefer to work in grocery stores because they get set hours and benefits. When I worked for a mom & pop bakery I could work anywhere from 13-60 hours a week (I was at their mercy), got shitty pay that was barely above minimum wage, and no health insurance or anything. When I switched to retail bakery not only did I get a set schedule and hours, but I got good health insurance, employee discounts (10-25% off groceries goes a long way), and even 401k matching. I had to deal with a bunch of corporate bullshit but thankfully they didn’t come around too often. Overall, it was a pretty fun job.
I got sick and can’t work anymore, but I wanted to share some of my cakes from my bakery days, as well as a few I’ve made from scratch from home. Nowadays I mostly just bake for friends and family. I still enjoy it, but I miss making hundreds of cakes a week and having someone else do my dishes!

We bought a shark cake for my daughter’s 16th with the notation “make it gross”. When we picked it up they told us the decorator loved it she went all around the grocery store to get props. Unfortunately we lost out drive with the photos.
She did a ship wreck type scene with bloody body parts and the color going from ocean blue to purple red. With a shark with a doll head and torso coming out of it. (Like a cheap Barbie)

These are absolutely amazing. I’m sorry to hear you got sick and cannot work at the grocery stores anymore, but you are now doing it for friends and family and that’s wonderful.

When I need a cake I go to my neighbourhood chain grocery store. They do gorgeous work, and let’s face it, the standard cake mixes they use are tasty as all get out. Always wonderful to work with, too.

Whole Foods? I was a baker there years ago and our cake decorators at the time were INCREDIBLE. Better than some independent spots in my area.

Sidenote: We have a family friend who’s a public defender and deals with the same type of stigma. Like, it wasn’t *all he could get because he’s a mediocre lawyer*. He *chose* where he wanted to be, he’s an *outstanding* lawyer and *loves* going to work every day. Just like you, it’s about passion and pride no matter where you are.

Some of the best cake decorations I’ve ever seen came from people who got their start at a grocery store.
They get TONS of practice and that’s a key to success, imo.

Is this this common in most American grocery stores? I’m from Sweden and would never find that here. Some bigger stores might sell ready made cakes but I don’t think they would make custom ones (perhaps some writing but I doubt it). Also don’t really have that much buttercream cakes here, maybe that’s part of the reason…
